Lord Aseida and Haikuti: master–bodyguard ties and responsibility for the conspiracy
PeacemakerThe relationship between Lord Aseida and Haikuti joined the Kadagidi lord to the Shadow Guild’s chief tactician, but it did not place the greater political power where the title of lord suggested. Haikuti, Aseida’s chief bodyguard, had helped direct the conspiracy from behind Murini’s rule; after Haikuti’s death, Aseida was taken into custody and questioned about the operatives he had harbored.
Lord and Chief Bodyguard
Haikuti served as Lord Aseida’s chief bodyguard, a position that placed the Guild tactician close to the Kadagidi lord while concealing the scale of his wider political role. Aseida claimed innocence of everything and was described as no great intellect. The account does not establish how much he knew of Haikuti’s work, leaving a sharp distinction between Aseida’s denial and the substantial responsibility attached to the forces sheltered under his authority.
Haikuti’s Political Power
Although Haikuti belonged to the Assassins’ Guild, he had been the Shadow Guild’s chief tactician and, for two years, the power ruling the Aishidi’tat from behind Murini. His position as bodyguard to Lord Aseida thus contrasted with his reach as a strategist operating behind the ostensible ruler. Haikuti’s charismatic, authority-resistant nature might have made him a stronger overt leader than Murini, but Guild membership barred him from holding political office. The restriction that prevented Haikuti from openly taking power helps explain the significance of his influence from behind the curtains.
Death and Aseida’s Arrest
The relationship came under scrutiny after Ilisidi’s forces confronted the Shadow Guild’s southern leadership and obtained the legal cause to move against the Kadagidi in the north. Aseida was aboard the train ahead of the party, where Ilisidi’s bodyguard questioned him continuously; those guards had just been shot at by Shadow Guild operatives he had been harboring.
At Asien’dalun, Haikuti died alongside two Guild units and the person who had fired from an upper-corner window. Tabini was told that Aseida had been brought out of hiding under escort. Aseida was taken to Tirnamardi and sought protection from Lord Tatiseigi, who refused him. The account does not resolve Aseida’s knowledge or culpability, but it makes the consequences of his association with Haikuti concrete: the bodyguard’s covert power and the Guild violence sheltered on Kadagidi soil brought the lord himself into custody and left him without the protection he requested.
