Chinicook
StrikeChinicook is a remote property on the north side of Pemberwick Island where the narrator and Tori Sleeper build a seaside home and preserve the rest of the land. Its significance is both practical and commemorative: it becomes their home, while its protected landscape honors Mr. Sleeper’s death defending the island in another life and time.
Setting and Use
Tori Sleeper and the narrator purchase Chinicook as a secluded property on the island’s north side. They build their home beside the sea and leave the remainder of the property as an unspoiled nature preserve. The arrangement makes Chinicook both a lived-in refuge and land deliberately kept apart from development.
Memorial to Mr. Sleeper
The preserve is maintained in honor of Mr. Sleeper, who died trying to protect his beloved island from invaders who had taken over the protagonists’ world in another life and time. Chinicook therefore carries a history that is not simply local: the peaceful landscape and the home established there are bound to an earlier conflict and to the loss of Tori Sleeper’s father.
Place in the Later Narrative
The home on Chinicook is where the day of the narrator’s visit to young Tucker’s graduation begins. That quiet domestic setting precedes the group’s journey to Cardinal Stadium, linking the island retreat to the narrator’s continuing attention to Tucker’s life. Chinicook stands at the intersection of private life, remembrance, and the future the narrator hopes to influence.
