during Hester's public exposure
The Minister's Appeal to Hester
Governor Bellingham and the Reverend John Wilson urge the young minister Arthur Dimmesdale to exhort Hester to reveal the name of her fellow sinner. Dimmesdale, visibly agitated, speaks to Hester with a trembling voice, urging her to confess for the sake of her soul and her child. Hester refuses, saying the scarlet letter is too deeply branded and that she will endure her agony alone.
