during Hester's public exposure
The Recognition of Roger Chillingworth
In the crowd, Hester recognizes a small, deformed man accompanied by an Indian. This is her long-lost husband, who has been presumed dead. He gestures for her to keep his identity secret. He learns from a townsman that Hester has been convicted of adultery and that her husband's identity is unknown. He vows to discover the father of her child.
