Karen Walker

Karen Walker is a quiet student in Lilith’s biology class whose small, practical connections—to school music, bowling, and Luis—place her at the edge of several of Lilith’s changing relationships. Though she is not presented as a central member of Lilith’s band, her appearances trace a gradual opening from distant classmate to welcome presence among Lilith’s friends.

Identity and Introduction

Karen sits next to Lilith in biology. She is described as shy, but Lilith notes that she has never been rude to her. The distinction matters: Karen is reserved, not hostile, and Lilith’s later decision to approach her grows from that modest record of decency rather than from an established friendship.

Music and School

Karen serves as the Perceived Slights’ new guitar technician. While setting up the group’s instruments, she plucks the strings and turns the pegs of Chloe King’s gleaming electric guitar. Lilith can tell that Karen does not really know what she is doing, while the band members lounge on the risers, drinking smoothies and looking at their phones. The scene gives Karen a tentative role in a musical world she appears interested in, even if she is still learning its practical demands.

Social Connections

At the bowling alley, Lilith spots Karen in another lane with several girls from school. They cheer when Karen celebrates a strike. Lilith has not previously considered that the two might become friends, but Karen’s presence there, her involvement with music, and her plans to attend prom with Luis make approaching her seem natural.
