“Mort aux vaches”

1919

“Mort aux vaches” is a recurring anti-police slogan in the Paris general-strike sequence of The Camera Eye. Heard amid clashes between demonstrators and security forces, it makes hostility toward the police one part of a wider protest against war and the postwar order.

Meaning and Use

The phrase appears first as a stark, self-contained declaration, then returns within the crowd’s chants. At the Republique, it is voiced alongside calls against war and what the protesters call the assassins’ peace. The repetition gives the slogan the force of a refrain: it identifies the police as an immediate target of anger while linking that anger to a larger political demonstration.

In the Street

The slogan is heard against a rapidly escalating confrontation. At the Republique, demonstrators throw stones and pieces of iron at the Republican Guards, while some prod the guards’ horses with umbrellas. Near the Gare de l’Est, the gendarmerie advances through whistles, stones, and fragments of iron as the crowd sings The Internationale and calls for barricades. Gunshots follow; an old woman is struck, and people scatter into side streets and courtyards as cavalry charges.

The phrase does not stand apart from these events as a detached political slogan. Its recurrence accompanies the crowd’s movement from chanting and resistance to a dangerous retreat. After the narrator and a friend take shelter in a café, the streets outside are nearly empty; the slogan’s earlier force remains part of a scene whose immediate outcome is dispersal and fear.

Narrative Function

The Camera Eye presents the words as part of a shifting soundscape of protest: fragments of The Internationale, antiwar cries, calls against the police, and orders to build barricades. That collage places the slogan among competing voices and actions rather than explaining it through a formal political argument. Its return helps register how the strike’s public dissent becomes street confrontation, while the abrupt movement from collective chanting to people fleeing leaves the protest unresolved.
