The Devoted Mother The Bungalow Grace Turner lives in the bungalow on the Tallis estate. She works as the Tallises' cleaner, a position she has held since her husband abandoned her. She is proud of her son Robbie, who has risen above his circumstances. The Clairvoyant Grace supplements her income by telling fortunes. She has a gift for reading people. She knows something is wrong when Robbie comes home agitated. She tries to comfort him, but he is distant. The Arrest When Robbie is arrested, Grace is devastated. She knows he is innocent. She goes to the Tallis house to protest, but she is powerless. She watches her son being taken away in handcuffs.

The Fury The Confrontation As Robbie is being driven away, Grace runs out and blocks the police car. She raises her umbrella and strikes the bonnet, shouting "Liars!" She is restrained by constables, but she continues to scream. Her protest is futile but powerful. The Loss Grace loses her son to prison, then to war. She never sees him again. She sells the bungalow and moves away. Her life is defined by loss. She becomes a tragic figure, a mother who could not save her child. The Legacy Grace's protest is a symbol of the injustice at the heart of the novel. She is a working-class woman fighting a system that has already condemned her son. Her voice is silenced, but her cry of "Liars!" echoes through the story.
