Norma

Beautiful

Norma is one of Gideon’s closest friends at TAPs, a candid and teasing presence who can puncture his attempts to make himself unseen. Her enduring partnership with Andy and her warm, physical welcome to Ava reveal a character whose humor is also a way of drawing people into the group.

Identity and Friendship

Gideon describes Norma and Andy as his only friends when he reflects on giving up his phone and other electronic devices. He met them in a circle like the one in his first class, and Norma is among the people he trusts enough to trade blunt remarks with. Their friendship is presented through ease and familiarity rather than ceremony: she can challenge him publicly, and he answers without treating the exchange as a rupture.

That directness is especially clear during a class discussion about superpowers. Gideon says he would choose invisibility, imagining the mischief he could get up to if he could listen to conversations, whisper in people’s ears, or move their belongings. Norma immediately rejects his answer and then points out that he already makes himself invisible. When Ria invites him to respond, Gideon declines and gives Norma the finger. The exchange turns a playful classroom question into a pointed observation about his habit of withdrawing, delivered in the language of friends who know one another well.

Relationship with Andy

Norma and Andy become a couple soon after Gideon and Andy first become allies and friends. From Gideon’s perspective, they have been together for as long as he has known them. He jokes that at fourteen such couples seem bound to fail, then identifies Norma and Andy as the rare exception. Their relationship is therefore not just a detail about Norma’s romantic life: it is one of the stable features of Gideon’s small social world, alongside his friendship with both of them.

Welcoming Ava

At the fourth annual Day in the Park, Norma runs over to Gideon, squeals, and jumps into his arms, wrapping her legs around his waist before hugging him tightly. She then turns to Ava, puts an arm around her, and welcomes her to the gathering. The quick sequence makes Norma’s affection for Gideon visible while also showing her bringing Ava into the group. Her greeting offers a lively contrast to Gideon’s worry that the crowded event will be an uncomfortable place for his first time hanging out with Ava.

Narrative Role

Norma’s characterization rests on a revealing contrast: she treats Gideon’s wish to be invisible as something she can tease him about, but her actions also make connection tangible. She challenges his self-description in the classroom and later greets him with an unabashed embrace; at the park, that embrace extends outward as she welcomes Ava. Through these small, concrete moments, Norma helps define the friendly, irreverent social circle that Gideon has found at TAPs.
