The Three MadamsThe Three Madams
The Line Jenny, the Nigger, and Faye Salinas has three main brothels: Jenny's (rowdy), the Nigger's (austere), and Faye's (motherly). Each serves a different clientele. They compete but also coexist. The Social Role Brothels are an accepted part of town life, though not openly discussed. They provide a release for men and are often run by respectable businesswomen. The Arrival of Kate Kate, a newcomer, arrives at Faye's house. She is beautiful and mysterious. Faye takes her in, not knowing that Kate will eventually take over her life and her business.
Kate's Poisoning of FayeKate's Poisoning of Faye
The Slow Murder The Feigned Affection Kate pretends to love Faye, calling her 'Mother'. She takes over the household management and becomes indispensable. Faye, lonely and trusting, makes a will leaving everything to Kate. The Use of Poison Kate begins to poison Faye with small doses of croton oil, causing a lingering illness. She also uses nux vomica and other substances. The illness is attributed to botulism from home-canned string beans. The Death of Faye Faye's health deteriorates. She dies in agony, convinced that Kate is her loving daughter. Kate inherits the house and a fortune. The murder is never discovered, but the suspicion lingers.
The Circus and BlackmailThe Circus and Blackmail
The Dark Turn The Sadistic Shows Kate changes the nature of the house, introducing 'circuses' that cater to sadomasochistic desires. She photographs clients in compromising positions. The Blackmail Empire Kate uses the photographs to blackmail prominent men in Salinas, including politicians, judges, and businessmen. She builds a secret archive of their secrets. The Fear of Exposure Kate's power is based on fear. She is untouchable because she can destroy the reputations of the town's elite. This creates a tense standoff between her and the authorities.
The Ethel ThreatThe Ethel Threat
The Loose Thread Ethel's Memory Ethel, a former whore from Faye's time, remembers the night of Faye's death. She has kept the broken glass from the poison bottles. She tries to blackmail Kate. Kate's Response Kate pays Ethel off, but then arranges for her to be arrested and run out of town. She later regrets this, realizing it might have drawn attention. She sends Joe to find Ethel. The Unresolved Threat Ethel is killed in a drunken accident before Joe can find her. The threat is neutralized, but Kate is left paranoid. The fear of discovery haunts her final years.
The Death of the NiggerThe Death of the Nigger
The End of an Era The Austere Funeral The Nigger, one of the three madams, dies. Her funeral is a somber affair, with only her husband present. She is buried without ceremony. The Gossip Afterward Joe Valery attends the funeral and meets Alf Nichelson, who tells him about the rumors surrounding Faye's death. This gives Joe ideas about blackmailing Kate. The Symbolic Passing The Nigger's death marks the end of an older generation of brothels. Kate's more vicious house is now the dominant one, but it too is approaching its end.
The Discovery of Kate's BodyThe Discovery of Kate's Body
The Final Scene The Gray Room Joe Valery enters Kate's gray room and finds her dead from a poison capsule. He loots her safe-deposit keys and the blackmail photographs. The Escape and Death Joe tries to flee Salinas, but Sheriff Quinn's men are after him. He is shot and killed by a deputy. The photographs are recovered. The Burning of the Evidence Sheriff Quinn, to protect the town's prominent citizens, burns the photographs and the negatives. He also destroys Kate's will, which leaves everything to Aron Trask.
