Sturup Airport

Firewall

Sturup Airport is a recurring point of arrival, departure, and investigation in the story. Its connections to a visiting police specialist, an unidentified taxi passenger, and Elvira Lindfeldt’s movements place it at the edge of several strands of the case, linking local events in Ystad to people and journeys from farther afield.

A Meeting Point for the Investigation

When the police arrange for a National Police computer specialist to come to Ystad, Martinsson volunteers to meet his plane at Sturup Airport. The specialist is Hans Alfredsson, whose name prompts laughter among the investigators because of its association with a famous Swedish comedian. The practical detail gives the airport a role in the team’s work: it is where outside technical assistance is expected to enter the investigation.

A Lead in the Taxi Inquiry

The airport becomes more directly significant when investigators trace a taxi used by a man they suspect is connected to the case. The driver, Stig Lunne, says he picked up the passenger at Sturup Airport at 12:02 p.m. The journey had not been booked in advance. Lunne describes the passenger as tall, thin, and suntanned, wearing a summer suit; the man did not speak Swedish and showed him the destination on a piece of paper. The sparse description leaves the investigators with a lead rather than an identification, but the pickup point gives them a concrete route to pursue.

Elvira’s Passing Reference

Sturup Airport also marks Elvira Lindfeldt’s movements around her meeting with Wallander. As she drives toward Ystad, she calls him after passing the exit for the airport. The following night, while driving back toward Malmö, she pulls into a roadside parking place and phones Carter in Luanda to report that Robert Modin has identified the person attacking their system. The airport is not the setting of that call, but its presence in Elvira’s route ties her movements to the same travel network investigators are trying to understand.
