Kullervo’s enslavement

Kalevala

Kullervo’s enslavement is a succession of forced dependencies, first under Untamo and then under Ilmarinen. The change of master does not free him: it transfers him from a household that cannot contain him to one that gives him a specific, subordinate role as a shepherd.

From Untamo’s Household

The account presents Untamo’s despair as a consequence of Kullervo’s extraordinary resistance. His body is described as immortal, unable to suffer death or torture; when Kullervo has grown and gained strength, Untamo addresses him over whether he will live in a manner becoming to him. These details frame the boy not as someone whose submission can be secured through ordinary bodily punishment, but as a dependent whom his master cannot readily command.

As Kullervo grows, he is given work, but the arrangement fails. Untamo attributes the ruin of whatever Kullervo touches to his witchcraft. The text thus connects his reputation for destructive work with the decision to remove him from the household: Untamo resolves to take him away and sell him rather than continue employing him.

Sale to Ilmarinen

Untamo carries out that decision by selling Kullervo in Karyala to the blacksmith Ilmarinen. The passage also names Ehstland in Untamo’s stated plan to carry the boy there, while specifying Karyala as the place of sale. The transaction makes Kullervo’s status explicit: he is not simply sent to another task but traded to a new owner, with hammer-work identified as the labor expected of him.

The heading for Rune XXXII identifies Kullervo as Ilmarinen’s wizard-servant and introduces the episode as his life as a shepherd. Together, these labels establish the next stage of his servitude: the account carries him from Untamo’s household into Ilmarinen’s, where his work is assigned within the blacksmith’s household.

Shepherd in Ilmarinen’s Household

Ilmarinen’s wife, formerly the Maiden of the Rainbow, considers how to employ the purchased youth. The text presents her deliberation as the immediate circumstance behind Kullervo’s new occupation. She eventually makes him a shepherd and keeper of her pastures. The change is concrete: although Untamo had expected him to swing the heavy hammer for Ilmarinen, the household instead places him in charge of the grazing land.

The episode therefore ends this portion of Kullervo’s enslavement not with release but with reassignment. His path from Untamo to Ilmarinen is marked by sale, a change of household, and a change in the labor expected of him. His resistance to death and torture has not ended his subjection; nor has the move to Karyala restored his freedom. It has only placed his service under another master’s roof.
