Miles's attempts to see Illyan

Memory

Miles Vorkosigan’s attempts to see Simon Illyan turn a visit to a hospitalized colleague into an open contest over authority inside ImpSec. As acting chief, Lucas Haroche can bar Miles from the building; Miles can invoke his status, press for an explanation, and return, but those advantages do not get him to Illyan’s bedside. The repeated refusals culminate in a physical ejection and an order to stun him if he tries again.

The first request

On his first visit, Miles approaches ImpSec headquarters beneath the pressed gargoyles over the side door, which seem to him burdened by sinister secrets. The image fits the guarded atmosphere inside: the lobby clerk looks harried, and Miles sees similar expressions on some of the men he passes. He identifies himself as Lord Vorkosigan and asks to see Simon Illyan. The clerk checks the roster and finds no appointment for him.

Miles does not claim to have a scheduled visit. He says he has dropped by and asks for a visitor tag, pointing out that Illyan is in the clinic. Because Illyan is off duty and Haroche has become acting chief, Miles assumes the staff must know of the change in command. The clerk nevertheless refuses to let him in. The exchange establishes the practical obstacle: Miles’s standing does not itself confer access to a restricted patient, and the person at the desk will not make an exception.

Rather than accept the clerk’s refusal, Miles asks who is on duty. When the request is passed to Jarlais, the response remains uncertain and negative. Miles calculates that appealing through the full chain of command could take half an hour, and instead asks that General Haroche be called directly. It takes ten minutes to reach him. The delay and the detour through successive staff members make the visit a test of the institution’s gatekeeping as well as a request to see Illyan.

Haroche refuses access

Miles tells Haroche that he has come to see Illyan. Haroche answers that it is impossible. Miles rejects that formulation: in his view, Haroche is choosing not to allow the visit, rather than confronting an absolute impossibility. Haroche pauses, then asks the clerk to activate the cone of silence and yield the comconsole seat to Miles. The private channel briefly changes the setting of the dispute, but not its balance of power.

Haroche points to a prior authorization, says Illyan must have forgotten to alter it, and revokes it. Miles is outraged, but recognizes that Haroche has the authority to do so. He considers appealing to Gregor, then restrains himself: Gregor is an option Miles believes he can use only once, and only in a dire emergency. Instead, he tells Haroche that prudence has become a paranoia unable to distinguish friend from foe.

Haroche describes Miles as an idle, curious civilian and says he has no time to entertain him. He directs Miles not to pester the staff, insists that whatever the Emperor chooses to tell Miles is the Emperor’s business, and ends the call. The cone of silence disappears, leaving Miles back in the lobby with the clerk. His first effort has produced no visit and no explanation of Illyan’s condition. On returning to Vorkosigan House, Miles locks himself in his bedroom and calls Gregor; it takes forty-five minutes to get through, and he persists until the call connects.

A second attempt

An hour later, Miles returns to ImpSec headquarters. The weather has turned the morning gray and cold, and the building’s gargoyles look blank in the shadowless light. The heavy, closed architecture gives physical form to the obstruction he faces. Miles’s suspicion is sharpened by Haroche’s priorities: Haroche has placed guards with the highest security clearances around Illyan, but Miles sees no comparable insistence on the best doctors, medical technicians, or specialists. To Miles, the arrangement resembles confinement more than care.

The clerk again says that Miles is not on the roster. This time Miles declares that he will remain at the entrance until he gets results and orders the clerk to call Haroche. He displaces the clerk from the station chair and presses through to Haroche’s office, refusing to let the request dissolve into another referral. Haroche objects that he has already settled the matter and says Illyan is in no condition to socialize. Miles does not argue that Illyan is ready to socialize: he formally requests admission to see him.

Haroche denies the request and moves to end the call. Miles tries to keep the conversation open, asking Haroche to explain what is happening and insisting that he is trying to help. He adapts his appeal to Haroche’s blunt manner rather than continuing with the softer, more elaborate arguments he had considered. For a moment Haroche’s expression eases, but it hardens again, and he orders Miles to leave. When Miles says he will return, Haroche warns that he could have him arrested for trespassing in a restricted area, find additional charges, or have him stunned.

Ejection and significance

Haroche ends the call. About a minute later, while Miles is still pressing the clerk to try Haroche’s secretary, two armed guards arrive and take him by the arms. They hustle him through the door and the outer gates, then deposit him on the sidewalk outside the perimeter wall. Martin Kosti follows behind, unsure how to respond. The senior officer tells the gate guards that Haroche has directly ordered Miles to be stunned if he attempts to enter again. The guards acknowledge the order and return inside.

Miles is left across the street in a bare strip of park, on a bench facing ImpSec’s architecture. His face is flushed; he struggles for breath against the humiliation and rage, while Martin sits at the far end of the bench, waiting for instructions and not daring to speak. The visit has ended not merely in denial but in a public removal, with a threat of force attached to any further attempt.

The sequence makes the conflict concrete through repetition: Miles asks, Haroche refuses, and Miles comes back. His status can get him a direct conversation with the acting chief, but it cannot override Haroche’s control of the building. The contrast between guards around Illyan and Miles’s concern about medical expertise also gives the access dispute a larger stake. For Miles, seeing Illyan matters because the incapacitated chief is being held within an organization whose new leader controls both the information and the door. The final image of Miles outside the perimeter marks the limit of what persistence alone can achieve.
