Zoave Twilight hostage rescue
MemoryThe Zoave Twilight hostage rescue is a successful Dendarii operation to recover Lieutenant Vorberg, a Barrayaran courier officer, from hijackers. It also exposes the mission’s larger stakes: Vorberg was carrying credit chits and vital diplomatic information, and Simon Illyan wanted to know whether his capture had been accidental or deliberate.
Background and Stakes
The hijackers had seized an unarmed freighter registered to Zoave Twilight and discovered that a Barrayaran Imperial courier was aboard. Vorberg’s packets made him more than an ordinary hostage: they contained credit chits and sensitive diplomatic information. Rather than return him and the packets, undamaged and unexamined, to the nearest drop-point, the hijackers tried to sell him to the highest bidder.
The operation served several interests at once. The Dendarii Free Mercenary Fleet was officially sponsored by the insurance company covering the Zoave Twilight ship, but the Barrayaran Empire was also backing the mission. Recovering the courier would protect the next Imperial courier in similar circumstances; investigating the kidnapping could establish whether the raiders had stumbled upon Vorberg by chance or had selected him on purpose.
The Rescue and Capture
Miles Vorkosigan and Elli Quinn led a patrol into the hijackers’ ship and found Vorberg in the brig. After the medtech checked him for mechanical or chemical booby-traps, the team began the return through the ship’s corridors toward its waiting Dendarii combat shuttle. The rescue party escaped without being challenged by the hijackers, who were occupied elsewhere.
The operation expanded beyond the recovery of the courier. Green Squad got the hijacked ship’s crew out, and the Dendarii seized the raiders’ large vessel. Nineteen prisoners were secured aboard it, while three of the enemy were killed. Six or eight others escaped in a jump-pinnace. Quinn reported that the pinnace was weakly armed and that the Ariel could catch it, leaving Miles to decide whether to demand surrender or destroy it.
Outcome and Unresolved Inquiry
Miles ordered an interrogation of the prisoners and a careful record of the evidence. If they were the same group responsible for murdering the passengers and crew of the Solera the previous year, Vega Station offered a reward; it also offered a reward for proof of their deaths. The possibility of claiming either payment made accurate documentation important, while Miles’s plan to demand surrender once left open the possibility of a further confrontation.
The mission was judged successful because the hostages had been brought out alive, even though the operation had not gone exactly to plan and equipment had been damaged. Miles regained consciousness aboard the Dendarii shuttle after the rescue, where the medical team was also attending to Vorberg. The immediate recovery was complete, but the investigation was not: Simon Illyan’s priority was to establish whether Vorberg had been kidnapped accidentally or deliberately, a question whose answer could point to a deeper security problem.
