The Vorberg injury incident
MemoryThe Vorberg injury incident was a friendly-fire accident during the Zoave Twilight hostage rescue: a seizure incapacitated Miles Vorkosigan and his armor’s plasma arc struck Lieutenant Vorberg. The rescue remained a success by the standard that everyone survived, but it left Miles confronting the consequences of an illness he had not disclosed and Vorberg facing a lasting physical change.
The Accident During the Rescue
After Miles went down, his suit transmitted abnormal telemetry and its plasma arc locked on. The weapon was built into the armor’s right arm, as it was in Elli Quinn’s suit. Its discharge injured Lieutenant Vorberg, the hostage-rescue target, rather than an enemy. The beam’s cauterizing effect helped prevent the wounds from becoming fatal.
The malfunction also made the armor dangerous to everyone nearby. Miles’s arm continued firing and damaged walls; four people held it while the medical team opened the armor and disconnected him. When he thrashed, Quinn stunned him at the back of the neck to stop him. She feared the intervention might have killed him, but he was left unconscious rather than dead.
Diagnosis and Immediate Aftermath
Once conscious, Miles asked what had happened to Vorberg. Quinn reported that the engineers considered remote control of the suit impossible, removing an apparent explanation for the weapon’s behavior. Miles identified a seizure as the likely cause and connected it to the aftereffects of his cryogenic revival the previous year. He also recognized that his earlier tests and medication had not established reliable control of the attacks.
The surgeon found that Vorberg’s injuries were below the knee joints, avoiding more serious complications. He was expected to recover sufficiently to be on his feet by the time he returned home, roughly six weeks later, but would be about three centimeters shorter. The relatively favorable prognosis gave Miles relief without erasing his horror at what might have happened had the arc struck higher.
Consequences and Significance
The incident turned a successful rescue into a personal and professional crisis for Miles. He had assured his ImpSec chief, Simon Illyan, that Vorberg could be rescued with scarcely any disruption to routine; instead, the rescuee was injured and Miles anticipated having to explain the accident. The contrast between the mission’s overall success and the harm caused by Miles’s own armor makes the episode a concrete measure of the risk his concealed condition posed to others.
Quinn’s account also shifts the incident from unexplained equipment failure toward a medical cause. Her experience of a past injury from plasma fire gives the conversation a particular weight, but the available evidence does not establish a final diagnosis: the surgeon could find no obvious abnormality in Miles’s scans and proposed monitoring him during an attack. The rescue therefore ends with Vorberg’s survival and a recovery plan, while the cause and future control of Miles’s seizures remain unresolved.
