House of Nowhere
MomoThe House of Nowhere is a detached building at the end of Never Lane and the destination toward which the Tortoise leads Momo. Its ornate bronze entrance gives way to a long marble-lined passage, then to a small door marked with Professor Secundus Minutus Hora’s name. The house’s decisive feature is its contrast with the lane: outside, movement behaves unnaturally; inside, that current is absent, and the route narrows toward the professor’s room.
Position and Approach
The house stands at the end of a narrow lane, detached from the closely packed buildings and set at right angles to them. That placement makes it a distinct terminus rather than another part of the lane’s crowded frontage. Momo first sees it beyond buildings whose turrets, gables, and balconies gleam like submerged glass palaces; the house itself is distinguished instead by a large bronze front door covered in ornamental figures.
The approach is shaped by Never Lane’s peculiar movement. Momo follows the Tortoise through deserted, snow-white streets, where the buildings seem to flash past despite the pair’s leisurely progress. When she tries walking forward along the lane, she cannot advance in the ordinary way; walking backward carries her toward the house, while her thoughts, breathing, and feelings also seem to move backward. The house therefore occupies the end of a passage whose direction must be negotiated on the lane’s terms.
The Entrance and Its Signs
At the threshold, the bronze door appears enormous to Momo. She wonders whether she will ever manage to open it, but it swings open by itself. Above it, an ivory unicorn supports a sign reading “NOWHERE HOUSE.” Momo pauses to read, and the door has begun to close again before she finishes; she slips inside just in time, and it shuts behind her with a sound like muffled thunder. The entrance is thus both a welcome and a narrowing opportunity: it opens without her effort, but she must still cross before it closes.
Interior Route
Beyond the door lies a long, lofty passage, with marble statues placed at regular intervals and apparently supporting the ceiling. The change from the lane is immediate: Momo finds no sign inside of the mysterious current that governs movement outside. The corridor offers a stable route, which she follows behind the waddling Tortoise.
At the far end, the Tortoise stops at a little door, just large enough for Momo to duck through. Its shell announces, “WE’RE HERE,” and Momo reads the name on the door at nose level: “PROFESSOR SECUNDUS MINUTUS HORA.” She takes a breath and lifts the latch. As soon as the door opens, a chorus of tinkling, chiming, ticking, humming, and whirring reaches her; she follows the Tortoise inside, and the latch clicks into place behind them. The passage therefore leads not merely into the house but to a smaller, explicitly identified destination, whose sounds announce the room before the narrative describes what lies within.
Spatial and Narrative Significance
The route through the House of Nowhere proceeds by successive thresholds: the lane ends at the bronze entrance, the long corridor ends at a little door, and that door admits Momo to Professor Secundus Minutus Hora’s space. The contrast between the backwards movement outside and the current-free passage inside gives the building a clear boundary function. It brings Momo out of the lane’s disorientation and to the professor, while the self-opening outer door and the audible interior beyond the final latch preserve an air of mystery around what awaits her.
