St Kilda
MovingSt Kilda is the seaside home Rowena makes in Australia with her partner Pat, and the place she invites Edwina to join her. Introduced through a photograph and then a letter, it becomes more than a location: it gives Edwina a concrete destination for a possible reunion with her daughter.
Setting and Connection
Rowena has bought a small house near St Kilda beach. Dickie tells Lucas about the house and the photograph Rowena enclosed: it shows her with Pat, whose arms are wrapped around Rowena’s waist. The image supplies Lucas with a glimpse of his stepsister’s life at a distance, while the beachside home locates that life in a new country and a new domestic setting.
An Invitation to Edwina
In a later letter, Rowena tells Edwina that they live very near St Kilda beach and invites her to come: Edwina can paint while the household fires up the barbecue. Rowena also says she wears Edwina’s charm bracelet every day. The letter joins a practical offer of companionship to a small sign of enduring attachment, making St Kilda the setting Rowena proposes for a renewed mother-daughter relationship.
A Destination for Reunion
Edwina reads the letter after Lucas has returned her jewellery box, and she is preparing to travel to Australia. St Kilda therefore becomes part of a carefully assembled future: she checks her passport and tickets, and plans to take the box and other keepsakes with her. The place is not shown directly; its importance comes through the photograph, Rowena’s words, and Edwina’s preparations to go there.
