Monks the Mysterious Stranger The Shadowy Figure Monks appears as a mysterious man who meets with Fagin. He is dark, haggard, and consumed by hatred. The Conspiracy Monks wants Oliver destroyed. He pays Fagin to corrupt him. His motives are unclear until later. The Encounter with Oliver Monks sees Oliver at the inn and reacts with violent anger. He later appears at the cottage window with Fagin.

Destruction of Evidence The Locket and Ring Monks buys the gold locket and ring from the Bumbles. These items prove Oliver's identity. The River Monks throws the locket and ring into the river, hoping to destroy all evidence of Oliver's parentage. The Trap Door He shows the Bumbles the trap door over the water, threatening them. He believes he has secured his secret.

Confrontation and Confession
