The Dodger's Skill

The Dodger's Skill The Accomplished Thief Jack Dawkins, known as the Artful Dodger, is Fagin's star pupil. He is adept at picking pockets and evading capture. Mentor to Oliver The Dodger introduces Oliver to Fagin and tries to teach him the trade. He is confident, streetwise, and proud of his abilities. The Pickpocketing Incident The Dodger picks Mr. Brownlow's pocket and escapes, leaving Oliver to be caught. This shows his skill and lack of concern for others.

The Arrest

The Arrest The Failed Pickpocket The Dodger attempts to pick a pocket but is caught with a silver snuff-box. He is arrested and taken to Bow Street. The Charge He is charged with attempted theft. The evidence is clear, and he is held for trial. Fagin's Reaction Fagin is upset at losing his best thief. He boasts about the Dodger's skills and predicts he will be transported.

The Trial

The Trial The Courtroom Scene The Dodger is tried at the Old Bailey. He behaves with bravado, cracking jokes and insulting the magistrates. The Verdict He is found guilty and sentenced to transportation for life. The Dodger accepts his fate with a show of indifference. The Aftermath Charley Bates mourns the Dodger's fate but is also impressed by his notoriety. The Dodger's transportation removes a key member of Fagin's gang.
