Planning the Burglary

Planning the Burglary Fagin and Sikes Confer Fagin and Sikes discuss a burglary at a house in Chertsey. They need a small boy to enter through a window. Fagin suggests Oliver. Nancy's Role Nancy is present during the planning. She is uneasy but does not object. The plan is set for the next night. Oliver's Reluctance Oliver is told he must go with Sikes. He is terrified but cannot escape. The plan moves forward.

The Night of the Burglary

The Night of the Burglary The Journey Sikes and Oliver travel to Chertsey. They meet Toby Crackit at a deserted house. Oliver is forced to drink alcohol. The Attempt Oliver is put through a window. He resolves to alarm the family. As he does so, he is shot by Mr. Giles. The Escape Sikes and Crackit flee, leaving Oliver wounded in a ditch. The burglary fails completely.

Oliver's Rescue

Oliver's Rescue Discovery by Giles Oliver crawls to the house and is found by Mr. Giles and the servants. They initially think he is one of the thieves. The Ladies' Compassion Rose and Mrs. Maylie take pity on Oliver. Dr. Losberne treats his wound. Oliver tells his story, and they believe him. The Investigation Blathers and Duff, the Bow Street officers, investigate. Dr. Losberne convinces them that Oliver is not a criminal. Oliver is allowed to stay.

The Gang's Reaction

The Gang's Reaction Toby's Report Toby Crackit returns to Fagin and reports that the burglary failed and Oliver was shot. Fagin is furious and worried. Fagin's Search Fagin frantically searches for news of Oliver and Sikes. He fears Oliver might reveal the gang's secrets. The Shift in Dynamics The failed burglary weakens the gang. Sikes goes into hiding, and Fagin becomes more desperate. The event sets the stage for the gang's eventual collapse.
