Gabriel Tagliasco

Gabriel Tagliasco, captain of the guard at the Porte du Cours in Grasse, plays a decisive role in the capture of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille. His deposition, given ten days after the murder of Laure Richis, provides the first concrete lead that breaks the case open. Tagliasco reports that at noon on the day of the murder, an individual fitting the description in the arrest warrant approached him and questioned him repeatedly and insistently about the road by which the second consul and his caravan had departed the city that morning. He had ascribed no importance to the incident at the time, nor later, and would have been unable to recall the man purely from memory—so thoroughly unremarkable was the man—had he not seen him by chance only the day before, right in Grasse, in the Rue de la Louve, in front of the studio of Maître Druot and Madame Arnulfi. On that occasion, he noticed that as the man walked back into the workshop, he had a definite limp. This observation, combined with the earlier questioning, leads directly to Grenouille's arrest an hour later. The innkeeper and groom from La Napoule, brought to Grasse to identify other suspects, immediately recognize Grenouille as the journeyman tanner who had spent the night with them, confirming Tagliasco's identification. Tagliasco's testimony thus serves as the crucial link that transforms a vague description into a specific suspect, enabling the authorities to close in on the murderer who had terrorized the region for nearly a year.
