Mahodaya Mountain

Ramayana

Mahodaya Mountain is a peak associated with healing herbs and with Hanumán’s extraordinary response to an urgent medical crisis. When Ráma is in danger, Hanumán is sent to the mountain to bring back plants of sovereign healing virtue; unable to find the specific herbs, he carries the mountain itself to Susheṇ so that the healer can choose from its growth.

Setting and Character

The poem identifies Mahodaya as a tall peak where wondrous healing herbs grow. Its importance in the cited episode is practical rather than descriptive: the mountain is presented as a source of remedies, without further account here of its geography or its place in a wider landscape.

The Healing Mission

With Ráma’s life feared to be at risk, Hanumán is directed to Mahodaya to obtain the powerful herbs. He reaches the hill but does not stop to search out or distinguish the plants he needs. Instead, he tears the mountain up from its broad base, taking its trees and shrubs with it, and carries the whole load through the clouds to Susheṇ.

Remedy and Narrative Significance

Susheṇ receives the uprooted mountain in wonder, then examines its growth and selects a healing herb. The episode makes Mahodaya’s abundance the answer to Hanumán’s difficulty: when he cannot identify the remedy, he brings the entire source of possible remedies to the healer. The mountain thus becomes an active resource in the crisis, while the scene’s movement from threatened life to the search for a cure turns its vegetation into the focus of urgent action.
