Jacob Javits Center
RetributionThe Jacob Javits Center in Manhattan becomes the setting for a decisive interruption in Chloe Joanna “C.J.” Townsend’s effort to qualify as a lawyer: on the morning of the bar exam, the scale and pressure of the testing room overwhelm her, and she leaves before completing the test. The location’s significance lies in this sharply timed reversal, from arrival among thousands of candidates to an abrupt departure home.
Setting and Purpose
The convention center is being used to administer the bar exam to approximately three thousand test takers. Michael Decker stays with Chloe the night before and drives her there at 7:00 A.M. She signs in, takes her assigned seat, and receives the thick multistate exam when testing begins at 8:00 A.M. The large, unfamiliar room turns the center into more than a practical venue: it gathers an immense field of candidates into the concentrated silence of a high-stakes examination.
The Interrupted Exam
Five minutes after the exam begins, Chloe looks around at the candidates near her. Some are bent over their papers; others scan the room nervously. Their presence intensifies her own anxiety. Her head throbs, her body trembles, and cold sweat and nausea take hold. She raises her hand, is escorted by a proctor to the ladies’ room, and vomits in a stall. After splashing cold water on her face and neck, she opens the bathroom door and walks straight out of the convention center.
Departure and Significance
At 8:26 A.M., Chloe takes a Yellow cab home and never returns to the exam. The precise interval between the 8:00 start and her departure fixes the episode as a rapid collapse of an attempt she had managed to reach but could not continue. The center thus marks both her physical arrival at the bar examination and her withdrawal from it; the test remains unfinished, while the journey home closes the scene.
