San Diego

Retribution

San Diego enters the investigation as both a former place of residence for William Rupert Bantling and the setting of a reported rape that helped C.J. Townsend connect his known history to a wider pattern of attacks. The city’s importance rests on the convergence of a case report, a recurring method, and Bantling’s recorded proximity—not on a standalone identification made at the time of the crime.

Setting and Connection to Bantling

Before arriving in Miami in 1994, Bantling had lived in San Diego. While searching reports from cities where he had previously lived, C.J. found a report of a rape in San Diego in early 1990. The assailant reportedly wore a clown mask, matching one of the disguises described in other cases she was examining.

C.J. compared the victim’s address with Bantling’s former addresses in his AutoTrack record. The records placed him no more than ten miles from the victim. This was a geographic association, not by itself proof that Bantling committed the crime; its significance came from its fit with the other details under review.

The Case in the Emerging Pattern

The San Diego report became one of six cases C.J. had identified across several cities. Her search had already uncovered attacks with similar features in California, and she added cases from Chicago and San Diego to that set. The incidents had occurred years apart and across different jurisdictions, which helped explain why investigators had not previously connected them.

The broader reports shared recurring features, including attacks in first-floor apartments at night and the use of a masked assailant. Across the cases, the mask varied: reports described clown and alien disguises. The resemblance of the reported methods supported a case-linkage hypothesis, while the variation in disguises cautioned against treating every detail as identical.

Investigative Significance

San Diego’s role is therefore evidentiary and geographic. The report gave C.J. a documented local case to compare with attacks elsewhere, while Bantling’s former address supplied a specific proximity to test against the emerging pattern. Together, those details shifted the inquiry from isolated local reports toward a possible series spanning multiple jurisdictions.

The connection remained part of a developing investigation rather than a confirmed finding from the original San Diego case. C.J. continued to seek corroboration, including records from other cities and information about attacks abroad. In the narrative, San Diego marks one of the points at which a scattered history of reported assaults begins to take shape as a broader pattern associated with Bantling.
