Chacha
ShōgunChacha, also known as Lady Ochiba, appears in the account of Toranaga’s planned escape as a hostage at Yedo. Her presence in the plan makes her a potential casualty of the contest between Toranaga and Ishido: Toranaga believes Ishido would willingly sacrifice her to keep him confined and politically vulnerable.
Political Position
The evidence places Chacha at Yedo as Toranaga’s hostage, a position that gives her immediate importance in the struggle among the Regents. She is not shown acting in the episode; instead, her status is described as one of the stakes Ishido might disregard in pursuit of control over Toranaga.
Place in the Escape Plan
Toranaga had arranged his secret escape in anticipation that Ishido would keep him inside the castle, persuade the other Regents to turn against him, and hold him under guard until their final meeting. In Toranaga’s assessment, Ishido would use any means necessary, even sacrificing Chacha, to prevent his escape and leave him exposed to impeachment and execution.
Significance
Chacha’s brief appearance reveals the human cost embedded in the political maneuvering: her safety is treated as expendable within Toranaga’s forecast of Ishido’s strategy. The account establishes her as a hostage whose fate could be bound to Toranaga’s freedom, without showing her perspective or what ultimately happens to her.
