Yabu

Shōgun

Yabu’s significance in the closing disclosure is that his plot sets Toranaga’s countermeasure in motion. The passage gives no full account of Yabu’s plan, but shows how the report of it becomes part of Toranaga’s decision to destroy Blackthorne’s ship and preserve Blackthorne’s life and presence in Japan.

Identity and Evidence

The available account identifies Yabu through Toranaga’s private recollection of a plot reported by Kasigi Omi. It does not explain the plot’s precise aim or establish the details of Yabu’s participation beyond that connection. The distinction matters: the disclosure implicates Yabu in a threat, but the deliberate ship sabotage that follows belongs to Toranaga, not to Yabu.

The Plot and Toranaga’s Countermove

After Kasigi Omi tells Toranaga of Yabu’s plot, Toranaga orders Naga to rearrange the ship’s watch. On the chosen night, trusted men spread gunpowder aboard, while the shore and deck watches are assigned to Izu men, including fifty-three men Toranaga regards as traitors. A single ninja then sets the ship alight with a flint. Toranaga’s account makes clear that Kasigi Omi and Naga were not informed of the sabotage.

Significance

The revelation places Yabu within the concealed maneuvering around Blackthorne’s ship, while sharply separating his plot from Toranaga’s own deception. Toranaga presents the destruction as a staged accident and a necessary exchange: the ship is lost so Blackthorne can be kept alive in Japan. Yabu’s role is therefore consequential but narrowly defined by this passage—as the source of the threat that prompts Toranaga to manipulate the watch, not as the author of the fire.
