Sazuko-no-kata
ShōgunSazuko-no-kata, also identified as Lady Sazuko, is Toranaga’s youngest consort. Though she appears only through reports about her household, those reports give her a consequential place in both Yabu’s intelligence network and the arrangements surrounding Toranaga’s family.
Identity and Household
Sazuko-no-kata is one of Toranaga’s consorts. Her maid serves as a spy in Yabu’s employ, making the consort’s household an indirect but important channel for information reaching Yabu. The evidence does not establish that Sazuko herself knowingly participates in espionage; the connection is specifically through her maid.
Political Intelligence
When Yabu learns that Toranaga has resigned, he cautiously identifies Lady Sazuko as the source behind the report. Igurashi confirms the source but cannot explain Toranaga’s decision. Their reaction establishes the intelligence channel’s credibility: they have not previously received false information from it. Yet the news seems so politically dangerous that Yabu struggles to believe it, reasoning that Ishido must have forced Toranaga to resign. The episode makes Sazuko’s household significant without making her personal intentions known.
Pregnancy and Family Circumstances
A later report says that Sazuko and Kiritsubo asked to remain with Toranaga rather than leave with Yabu’s father’s men. A doctor advised Sazuko to rest for a month because she was expecting a child and the journey might be harmful. The account also recalls that she fell on the night Yabu left. Naga responds with concern, while Jozen assures him that nothing serious has happened. Together, these details present Sazuko not simply as a name in political intelligence but as a pregnant member of Toranaga’s household whose health shapes its movements.
