Ginsel
ShōgunGinsel is a sailmaker and member of John Blackthorne’s Erasmus crew, one of the men Blackthorne finds alive in Japan after their separation. The surviving crew’s account identifies him as a gunner as well as a sailmaker; his first clear contribution to the reunion is a question about enemy ships and the prizes they might take.
Identity and Role
Ginsel appears among the crew gathered in a candlelit room with Blackthorne. Sonk, Johann Vinck, Salamon, Croocq, Baccus van Nekk, and Jan Roper are there too. The men are beaming as they wait for Blackthorne to begin, while Roper sits apart with his familiar sour expression. The scene places Ginsel within the ship’s working company, not among its officers.
Johann explains that Sato-sama, the samurai assigned to oversee the men, asked which of them were officers or seamen. In describing their skills, Johann identifies Ginsel as chiefly a gunner. This complements the narration’s identification of him as the sailmaker and suggests a crewman whose practical shipboard role extends to the Erasmus’s weapons.
Reunion and the Crew’s Situation
Blackthorne first asks after Captain-General Spillbergen. The crew answer that he is dead, speaking over one another until Blackthorne raises a hand and calls on Baccus to give the account. Ginsel is present for this exchange, but the evidence does not assign him a particular part in explaining what happened. Johann later says that the men have been in Japan for about a month and describes how they communicated with their Japanese overseer through Portuguese.
Outlook
Ginsel’s question about nearby enemy shipping and possible prizes gives the reunion its forward-looking turn. When Blackthorne replies that there is plenty and that they are all rich, the crew erupt in delight and toast the Pilot and the ship. Ginsel’s eagerness to talk of prizes makes him part of the crew’s collective return to maritime hopes: even after their separation and the reported death of their commander, he looks toward ships to pursue and the wealth a successful capture might bring.
