Molly Pagett Is Consumed by Flames After Touching Einor

Shrine

Molly Pagett Is Consumed by Flames After Touching Einor marks the moment a mother’s desperate attempt to reach her daughter becomes a fatal encounter with the creature possessing Alice Pagett. In the chaos at the shrine, Molly alone remains standing for a time; when she touches Einor’s charred body, fire engulfs her, and Gerry Fenn’s attempt to save her comes too late.

Molly Reaches for Alice

As the worshippers recoil from the small, unclean figure, some crouch with their heads covered while others remain kneeling, staring in horror. Molly Pagett is the only person still standing, but she is already sinking, one arm raised toward her daughter. She calls out to Alice, and the malevolent voice answers by declaring that Alice is in death, caught between the shrine and the underworld, and that no one can save either her or Molly. The exchange makes the gulf between mother and daughter explicit: Molly is reaching toward Alice, but the voice speaks as though Alice has already been claimed.

Molly stumbles forward and sinks to the floor, stretching both hands toward the smoldering figure. The creature laughs. Gerry Fenn sees a burning, twisting shape hanging from a lower branch of the tree; as it turns, he recognizes Alice. Molly then lunges and touches Einor’s charred, rotted body. Fire runs along her fingers and arms and engulfs her head and shoulders. The contact changes the scene from a plea to a catastrophe: Molly’s reach does not bring her daughter back, but leaves Molly herself burning before the altar.

Fenn’s Attempt to Save Her

Before Molly’s last rush, Sue places Ben’s hand in Gerry Fenn’s and urges him to hold it. Fenn’s depleted strength begins to return through the contact, but the reprieve is broken by screams from the altar: Molly is rising from her knees, beating at her flaming hair with hands that are burning too. Her cries reach Fenn as a physical shock, and he turns from his own recovery toward her.

Fenn tears off his coat and climbs onto the platform, carrying it forward to smother the flames around Molly’s head and shoulders. The rescue cannot reach her in time. With one last piercing scream, Molly lunges toward the dark figure beyond the light; although the figure appears not to move, she fails to strike it and plunges from the platform into the field below. She lies there writhing, her body reduced to what Fenn sees as a fiery rag, until her agonized cries weaken and stop with her death. Fenn slumps to the floor, rocking on his heels, his coat useless in his lap. His attempt to save Molly ends not in rescue but in helpless witness, while the small figure advances into the light before the altar.

The Death Amid the Shrine’s Collapse

Molly’s death is followed by a silence that sharply contrasts with the uproar before it. The Bishop becomes quiet, while Gerry Fenn feels his senses fading; the image-corpse of the sixteenth-century nun chuckles as thunder breaks and the field begins to split. The sequence places Molly’s failed attempt to reach Alice at the threshold of a larger catastrophe: her death does not restore the daughter she reached for, and the shrine’s disorder continues to widen around her.

The rupture turns the scene from a desperate rescue into a vision of devastation. Fenn sees the opening chasm, the church tower beginning to crumble, graves opening, the crucifix fallen, and the misshapen tree looming over the ruined shrine. The image fixes Molly’s death within a landscape where the familiar religious setting has become part of the horror. Her final movement toward the dark figure ends in helplessness; Fenn is left with the useless coat and a vision of the destruction that follows.

Blood on Alice’s Dress

After the lightning fixes the ruined shrine in Fenn’s mind, Ben tugs at Sue and points to a specific sign of what has happened: “There’s blood all over Alice’s dress. Mummy.” His observation shifts attention from the collapsing landscape to Alice’s body and clothing, making the violence visible even amid the larger supernatural devastation.
