Paula and Rodney Tucker fall into the earth rak

Shrine

Paula and Rodney Tucker’s fall into the earth’s widening fissure turns the shrine disaster into a private reckoning. As the ground opens beneath the fleeing crowd, Tucker tries to save himself by freeing himself from his wife; Paula, having lost her mother in the chaos, then attacks him, and the two fall together into the chasm.

Collapse and Loss

Paula and her mother are caught in the first rush of panic. When someone collapses against them, they tumble over a bench into the soft earth. Paula scrambles up and feels among the legs passing close to her face until she finds her mother’s body. Her mother does not move; Paula feels beneath her coat and finds her heart still.

Paula cries out, and the trembling ground falls still. The surrounding cries subside, as do the hymn singing and prayers. She feels no grief at first, only numbness—and, unexpectedly, a sense of release. That numbness gives way when she notices Tucker collapsed nearby: hatred surges in its place. The uneasy calm ends as the earth opens again.

The Fissure and Tucker’s Wife

The ground tears open along the center aisle, driving the crowd back between the benches. In the moonlight, Paula sees figures reaching out of the darkness below, while people at the edge of the opening struggle to retreat. Tucker is among them, hindered by his wife, who has slipped toward the chasm with one leg over its edge.

His wife clings to his clothes and the soil, pleading for help. Tucker pulls her hands away, shouts at her to let go, and pries at her fingers. The earth crumbles beneath her; his coat tears, and she falls. Tucker stumbles back and tries to regain his strength as the opening continues to widen.

Paula and Tucker Fall

Paula rushes at Tucker, propelled by hatred of a man she sees as having betrayed and used her. She slams into him; he catches her, but her momentum is too great for him to hold his balance. He topples backward, clutching at her, and they plunge together, locked in a screaming embrace.

The sequence makes the widening fissure more than a danger to the crowd: it becomes the setting for Paula’s final confrontation with Tucker. Her mother’s death leaves her numb, but seeing Tucker transforms that numbness into fury. His attempt to save himself at his wife’s expense precedes Paula’s attack, and their shared fall closes the episode in violence rather than escape.
