Heckler & Koch HK91 rifle
StrangersThe Heckler & Koch HK91 rifle is the heavy assault rifle Branch Pollard uses in the winter ambush of a Guardmaster armored transport. Its technical power makes the shot credible; its carefully chosen target makes the scene’s restraint visible. Rather than using the weapon to kill, the team uses it to stop the truck and bring it within reach.
Capabilities and Design
The rifle is described as an exceptionally reliable combat weapon, capable of firing hundreds of rounds without jamming. Its accuracy extends to a thousand yards, and a 7.62 NATO round fired from it can pass through a tree or concrete wall with enough force remaining to kill someone on the other side. These specifications establish the HK91 as more than a convenient prop: it is a weapon whose range and penetration could make a roadside ambush lethal.
Use in the Ambush
On a foggy winter night, the Guardmaster truck approaches the knoll where Jack Twist is waiting in snow south of the road. Chad Zepp lies in a drift across from him, while Branch Pollard is positioned halfway down the knoll with the HK91. Aided by an infrared telescopic sight, Pollard fires as the truck approaches. The rifle’s muzzle flashes on the hillside, and its shot cracks above the engine noise.
Precision and Restraint
The shot is aimed at the truck’s right front tire, which bursts. The disabled vehicle swerves and begins to slide on the ice, but Pollard’s powerful rifle has not been used to shoot its occupants. The distinction is explicit: the team does not intend to kill anyone. The HK91’s destructive capacity therefore sharpens the significance of Pollard’s precision. Its first shot changes the truck’s course and helps bring the armored vehicle to a halt, while holding back from the far more lethal options the rifle could enable.
