Edgar’s flight from London and attempt to reach Stella

Asylum

Edgar Stark’s flight from London and attempt to reach Stella Raphael extended his escape from confinement into a fugitive search for the woman with whom he was obsessed. After Stella left the Horsey Street warehouse loft, Edgar stayed behind to work on a sculpted head, then fled shortly before the police arrived. He vanished among people who sheltered him, but eventually headed north looking for Stella; when he was arrested in Chester, Peter Cleave still could not establish whether Edgar intended to take her away or kill her.

Background and Earlier Escape

Edgar’s later flight from London followed an earlier escape from the hospital. He had recovered Max Raphael’s clothes from a hiding place in the woods at the end of the Raphaels’ garden, put them on, and kept away from the road until he was clear of the estate. From there, he made his way to London by an uncertain combination of hitchhiking, bus, or train. The hospital’s lax supervision of outside work parties and Max’s delay in reporting Edgar missing gave him time to get away. This earlier escape established the pattern that shaped the later pursuit: disguise, movement beyond the institution’s boundaries, and an ability to remain unlocated.

Edgar was eventually picked up in Chester while on his way to Stella and returned to the hospital in April. Cleave held him alone in a room on the top ward of the Refractory Block. He regarded the isolation as necessary rather than punitive, but Edgar’s return did not resolve the central question of what he wanted from Stella. Cleave had not been able to determine whether Edgar meant to carry her off or murder her.

Flight from the Warehouse Loft

After Stella left the Horsey Street warehouse loft, Edgar remained there alone for three days, working without rest on the head. On the fourth day, an unidentified visitor apparently came to see him and warned him that the police were on their way. Edgar left with a few clothes and books stuffed into a duffel bag. The police arrived only minutes after he had gone; Stella appeared only minutes after that. The close timing placed Edgar’s departure just ahead of both the police and the woman he was trying to find, without establishing whether he knew Stella was about to return.

The studio’s contents were impounded. Cleave was later invited to inspect them for clues to Edgar’s whereabouts, but what held his attention was the work Edgar had left behind: the drawings made while Stella was there and the head itself. The unfinished or abandoned artistic work marked the sudden break between his concentrated labor in the loft and his renewed flight.

Disappearance and Search for Stella

After leaving the loft, Edgar disappeared. Cleave reported that the available details were few and that the account of Edgar being sheltered by an underground network of artists and criminals was an inference. The network was thought to have fed and protected him in the following weeks, as he moved from studio to studio and flat to flat. A report placed him in a remote cottage near the sea in Cornwall; Cleave’s own suspicion was that Edgar had stayed in London, where he knew his way around. Neither account was confirmed.

The flight turned north when Edgar decided to look for Stella. He was arrested in Chester on the way to her, and soon afterward was readmitted to the hospital. His route therefore ended not in reunion but in renewed confinement. The evidence establishes the direction of his purpose, but not what he would have done if he had reached her.

Return and Consequences

Once back in the hospital, Edgar consistently refused to speak to Cleave. Cleave needed to assess him and recommend a treatment strategy before handing his care to a new doctor, but he was preparing for retirement and felt pressed for time. In an effort to provoke a response, he told Edgar bluntly and aggressively that he was engaged to Stella. He wanted Edgar to speak again and to reveal his present feelings toward her, as well as why he had tracked her to Chester. The confrontation exposed the unresolved stakes of the flight: Edgar had crossed distances and evaded the police in pursuit of Stella, yet his intentions remained unknown even after his capture.
