Cine Metro

Chowringhee

Cine Metro is the starting point for a rare, gentle night in Calcutta: after a film ends shortly after midnight, Sujata Mitra, Satyasundar Bose, and the narrator step outside and see Chowringhee in a new light. The cinema matters less as a venue than as a threshold between an ordinary outing and an unplanned walk through the city.

The Outing

The visit takes shape through small gestures of generosity and teasing. When the narrator suggests that Sujata Mitra can pay for the cinema tickets, she is ready to take money from her purse. She then argues that, as the eldest, she ought to give the treat herself. The exchange places the outing within the companions’ growing ease with one another, before the film gives way to the night outside.

From Cinema to City

The film finishes a little after midnight. The narrator is about to call a taxi when Satyasundar Bose proposes that they walk instead. Outside Cine Metro, Chowringhee appears in a new light, unlike the frightening versions of Calcutta the narrator has encountered on other occasions. Their walk pauses by the statue of Sir Ashutosh at the junction of Chowringhee and Central Avenue.

The Motorcycle Wish

A motorcycle passes during the pause, and Satyasundar Bose wistfully remarks that he would like to have one. Motorcycles were still uncommon on Calcutta’s streets at the time. The passing vehicle makes the wish concrete, while the narrator’s retrospective framing points forward to Sujata Mitra taking the spontaneous remark seriously and buying him a motorcycle. Cine Metro thus marks the beginning of an episode in which an ordinary film outing becomes the occasion for a consequential act of attention.
