Harimati Devi

Devdas

Harimati Devi, Devdas Mukherjee’s mother, remains physically distant from him in Varanasi during his final illness. Devdas refuses to let others summon her when he is sick, and later declines to visit her after leaving hospital. Her concern nevertheless reaches him in a letter found on his body after he dies: a small, unanswered inquiry that gives material form to the family bond he has kept at a distance.

Identity and Distance

Harimati Devi is identified through her relationship to Devdas and her home in Varanasi. She does not appear in person in these episodes; instead, the possibility of seeing her becomes a recurring decision Devdas avoids. Her absence is not evidence of indifference: a later letter from her asks how he is, establishing that she has written to him and is concerned for his well-being.

Devdas’s Refusal to Return

When Devdas comes home with a fever after being missing for two days, Dharmadas proposes writing to his mother in Varanasi. Devdas stops him, saying he cannot face her in that condition. Although Dharmadas argues that illness is nothing to be ashamed of and urges him to go, Devdas insists that they will visit once he has recovered. The plan leaves the reunion dependent on a future recovery that the narrative does not deliver.

A year later, after Devdas leaves a hospital in Bombay leaning on Dharmadas, the suggestion to go to his mother returns. Devdas is moved to tears as he reflects on the people in his life, including his mother, but again looks away and says that he does not feel ready to appear before her. The repeated postponement turns a practical journey into an emotional threshold he cannot bring himself to cross.

The Letter After His Death

After Devdas dies at Hatipota, two letters are found in his pocket. One is a message about money from Dwijodas Mukherjee; the other, from Harimati Devi in Varanasi, asks, “How are you?” The brief question confirms her continuing attention to her son, while its discovery after his death makes clear that the visit he kept deferring never took place. Harimati Devi’s role is therefore defined by both care and distance: she remains among the family ties Devdas recognizes, but their connection reaches its final moment through a letter rather than a reunion.
