Anti-matter mission to exterminate the creepers
Mickey7The Anti-matter mission to exterminate the creepers begins as a descent into the tunnels carrying weapons both Mickey Barnes and Mickey8 understand to be capable of mass destruction. Its immediate purpose is to spread antimatter among the creepers, whom Mickey Barnes recognizes as sentient. But the plan is contested from the outset: Mickey Barnes sees the mission as an atrocity, while Mickey8 treats it as necessary work on a colonial beachhead. They proceed anyway, and the scene closes with the two separated underground, still connected by voice channel and not yet shown detonating their weapons.
The weapon and its intended use
Each pack contains, for practical purposes, a miniature bubble bomb: fifty thousand tiny nuggets of antimatter drawn from what remains of the Drakkar’s fuel stores. Every nugget is isolated inside a magnetic monopole bubble. Once released, the bubbles are meant to disperse through the air, drifting like will-o’-the-wisps until they eventually pop. The strikingly small units therefore represent a large and diffuse threat; the plan depends on spreading them through the tunnels rather than delivering one single blast.
The packs make the intended violence physically immediate for Mickey Barnes. He says that the fact of carrying one on his back makes his skin crawl. That reaction accompanies an ethical objection, not simply fear of the device: he calls the creepers sentient and argues that using the weapons against them would be a war crime. He warns that if Midgard learns what the colonists have done, it could make them the next Gault. His appeal connects the local operation to a wider political consequence: an act justified as frontier security could expose the colony to the same kind of destruction it fears.
Dispute over sentience and colonial precedent
Mickey8 does not dispute that the creepers are sentient. Instead, he argues that their sentience is precisely why the mission must go forward, and invokes a distinction between using such weapons against humans and using them on a beachhead. He points to terraformers that have sterilized entire continents to make room for human settlement, reminding Mickey Barnes that the colony’s expansion already rests on devastation at a much larger scale. His defense turns on the discrepancy between the colony’s stated limits on violence and its established willingness to destroy nonhuman life for settlement.
Mickey Barnes counters not with an abstract principle alone but with a personal fact: one of the creepers saved him. Mickey8 responds by asking what he means, leaving the exchange at the point where the rescue has been disclosed but not yet explained. That brief interruption places an individual act of aid against the mission’s categorical treatment of the creepers as a target. The disagreement remains unresolved in the scene; the two continue downward despite their opposing judgments.
Descent and separation
After Mickey8 urges them on, Mickey Barnes tightens his pack straps and follows him down. Mickey8 proposes that they split up, travel as far apart as possible, and pull their triggers simultaneously. Their separation is a tactical measure: it is intended to maximize the weapons’ spread and prevent the blast from one device from interfering with the dispersal pattern of the other. The plan makes the operation a coordinated action by two people rather than a single detonation from one location.
Mickey Barnes begins to object, but Mickey8 cuts him off and tells him to start walking while keeping a voice channel open. He also raises the possibility that Mickey Barnes might encounter the creeper who saved him; if so, Mickey8 says, he should tell it that they are sorry. The remark acknowledges the moral weight of the earlier rescue without changing the mission or offering a means to spare the creature. Their channel is to remain open until they are ready to act, so communication persists even as the two deliberately move apart.
An unfinished operation
Mickey Barnes watches Mickey8’s heat signature fade after he disappears into one of the side tunnels. He remains there watching long enough to wonder whether Mickey8 might come back, but he does not. Eventually Mickey Barnes chooses a tunnel of his own, tightens the pack straps over his shoulders, and starts walking. The closing exchange confirms that the voice connection remains: Mickey8 checks whether he is there, and Mickey Barnes answers that he is.
The scene establishes the mission’s purpose, equipment, moral dispute, and method of deployment, but it does not show either bomb being released or triggered. Its endpoint is therefore not the extermination itself but the moment immediately before a potentially irreversible act: the two are separated in the tunnels, carrying the weapons and maintaining contact, while Mickey Barnes’s knowledge that a creeper saved him remains in tension with the operation he has joined.
