Exposure of Mickey's multiple bodies and their arrest

Mickey7

The exposure of Mickey's multiple bodies and their arrest is the moment Mickey Barnes’s concealed duplication becomes visible to others and turns into an immediate threat of execution. Nasha first identifies the two living instances through their conflicting injuries and daily activities; Cat Chen then encounters Mickey and Mickey8 together in Nasha’s bed. Security’s arrival closes the sequence with an order sending all three occupants to the cycler.

Discovery and the Evidence of Two Bodies

Nasha begins the conversation by asking about Mickey Barnes’s injured hand. Its recovery does not fit what she has seen: the hand had been fully healed earlier that afternoon, while the Mickey she is speaking to still has a badly injured one. She knows of another Mickey, encountered in the corridor, whose hand is uninjured and who spent the day growing tomatoes. The mismatch between bodies, injuries, and daily activity gives her concrete grounds to conclude that Mickey is a multiple, rather than simply a man behaving inconsistently.

Her disclosure distinguishes the two instances through ordinary, intimate details. The Mickey in front of her was the one she had breakfast with that morning and shared her bed the previous night; the other had been working with the tomatoes. The duplication is therefore not revealed by a formal test or an official investigation. It emerges from Nasha’s close attention to Mickey’s routine and body—and from the fact that two versions of the same person have moved through the colony in overlapping time.

Nasha’s Response and the Legal Stakes

Mickey’s first concern is whether Nasha has told Command. She has not. She reminds him that he recently saved her life and that she saved his the day before, making clear that she did not intend to turn him in without first speaking to him. Her response is personal, but it is not an endorsement of his situation: she says she has a serious problem with what he is doing and points out that making a multiple is a capital offense for everyone involved.

Mickey insists that the duplication was an accident and that he neither sought to become a multiple nor wanted to be turned into slurry. Nasha questions the plausibility of that explanation, then refuses to learn more about how it happened because she does not want to be implicated if the matter reaches the authorities. At the same time, she warns that someone else will soon notice that something is wrong and that Mickey will need a more convincing explanation. Her position combines care with self-protection: she keeps the secret for now, but neither promises to conceal it indefinitely nor treats the danger as abstract.

Cat Chen Sees the Duplication

The secret becomes visible during a later encounter in Nasha’s room. After an intimate interval shared by Mickey Barnes, Mickey8, and Nasha, a knock interrupts them. Cat Chen enters, and Mickey8 greets her by name. Cat stares at the occupants in silence; Mickey asks her to close the door so they can talk, while Nasha tells her to come in or leave but to shut it. Cat turns and runs, leaving the door open behind her.

The scene turns recognition into exposure without establishing what Cat intends to do with what she has seen. Her silent stare and sudden flight provide no explanation or reassurance, and Mickey can do nothing to retrieve the moment once she has left. Nasha points out the open door, and Mickey shuts it and engages the privacy lock. The practical gesture offers only a brief return to privacy: it cannot undo Cat’s discovery or ensure that the secret stays contained.

Security’s Arrival and the Immediate Consequence

Mickey wakes in darkness to the sound of the privacy lock being overridden. Light floods the room, and two Security officers enter carrying burners. They find Mickey Barnes, Mickey8, and Nasha together and order all three to get up and put on clothes, declaring that they have a date with the cycler. Cat is not present when Security enters, and the passage does not establish how the officers learned what had happened. It does, however, make the consequence unmistakable: the duplication and the encounter have brought the three people in the room under armed control and exposed them to lethal punishment.

The sequence escalates through successive thresholds of knowledge: Nasha recognizes the evidence, Cat sees the two bodies together, and Security breaches the room’s privacy lock. Each step reduces the possibility of managing the secret privately. What began as an apparent accident, sustained through personal trust and a warning to prepare a better explanation, ends with Mickey’s multiple status no longer concealable and all three occupants facing the cycler. The scene’s danger lies not only in the law Mickey has broken but in how quickly a private fact becomes a public emergency.
