Mickey7's fall into the crevasse and encounter with the giant creeper
Mickey7Mickey7’s fall into an ice shaft becomes a near-fatal descent into a network of tunnels and a first encounter with a giant creeper. Injured and unable to climb out, he expects the creature to kill him; instead, it carries him underground and sets him down close to the colony. The encounter reverses the expected relation between human and predator: the creature is terrifyingly capable of killing him, yet its actions leave him alive and near home, for reasons he cannot explain.
The Fall and Its Immediate Consequences
The incident begins after Berto Gomez drops Mickey7 at the head of a crevasse. Mickey7 climbs down among broken blocks of ice and continues on foot. His attention turns to a boulder protruding from the southern wall about thirty meters above him, its shape resembling a monkey’s head. Thinking about how he will describe it to Nasha, he fails to watch the ground. There is suddenly nothing beneath his left foot, and he plunges through an opening in the ice.
He comes to rest on the rough stone floor of a chamber in almost total darkness. His ocular searches for visible light for several seconds before switching to infrared, which reveals the roof and the ice-rimmed hole above him. The last moments before the fall return only as fragments, but he understands the immediate cause: he was looking up instead of where he was walking. His injured wrist may be broken, or at least badly sprained, and the pain confirms that the fall has not killed him.
Mickey7 can reach only a faint signal from Berto, too weak for voice or video but sufficient for text. Berto confirms that he is still alive. Yet the exchange offers no rescue: Mickey7 concludes that Berto is not coming for him, a conclusion he finds entirely believable. The opening is only about three meters overhead, but a wrist that cannot bear his weight makes it unreachable. He cannot tell how far he has fallen down the shaft; it might be twenty meters, or closer to a hundred. With no clear route out, he considers the prospect of freezing to death.
The Tunnels and the Creature’s Approach
As Mickey7 moves deeper, the conditions change. The infrared glow from the walls grows brighter, and he realizes that the temperature is rising rather than falling. He is beginning to sweat, a stark contrast with the surface, where the temperature had been below minus ten degrees Celsius when he broke through the crust and could fall below minus thirty at night. The tunnels themselves also undermine his first assumption that he is simply trapped in a natural fissure. They are roughly three meters wide, and their regular passages make him suspect that some burrowing animal has made them.
He first hears skittering while thinking about Nasha. The sound resembles small rocks tumbling down granite, but it stops and starts, becoming more frequent and closer as he presses on. After passing a cross-tunnel, he can no longer tell whether the noise is coming from ahead or behind. When he turns, the source is almost within reach.
The creature resembles a creeper, but its differences make it larger and more formidable than any familiar example. Its segmented body carries a pair of legs on each segment, with hard, sharp claws. Instead of one pair of mandibles at the front, it has two: a longer horizontal pair and a shorter pair held perpendicular to them. Inside are dexterous feeding legs and a round mouth lined with teeth. The creature is vastly larger than an ordinary creeper—about as wide as Mickey7 is tall, and extending down the tunnel as far as he can see. In the infrared light he cannot determine its color, though he guesses it would be brown or black in visible light, unlike the familiar white creepers.
Capture and Passage Through the Tunnels
Mickey7 tries to retreat, first raising open hands and then lowering them when the gesture appears to provoke the creature. It rears up, spreads both pairs of mandibles, and moves toward him with its front segments weaving from side to side. He considers opening his suit seals rather than being eaten, but before he can act, the creature strikes. Its mandibles close around his legs, shoulder, and waist, lifting him from the ground; the feeding legs pin his arms back with a grip he cannot break.
The mouth opens and closes less than a meter away, showing rows of black teeth inside a heat-filled throat. Mickey7 expects to be carried to a nest and eaten. Instead, the creature transports him through the tunnel system. Its feeding legs end in tentacle-like clusters, tipped with claws, and hold him fast as he struggles. He cannot reach anything with his feet or free his hands to open his seals. The journey is long enough that he briefly dozes; the clacking of the creature’s teeth wakes him, and he spends the rest of the ride watching them grind together. He notices that their angles keep them sharpened, an unsettlingly precise detail in an experience he has understood as a prelude to death.
At last, the creature enters a chamber like the one where Mickey7 first landed. It carries him across the open space and slides its head into a smaller side tunnel that appears to dead-end. Rather than drag him farther in, it puts his feet on the ground, opens its mandibles, gently pushes him with its feeding legs, and withdraws. The release does not explain the creature’s purpose, but it overturns Mickey7’s assumption that he is being taken as food.
Escape and Return to the Colony
Mickey7 begins moving away from the creature and notices that the end wall is registering visible light for the first time in hours. It is not rock but hard-packed snow. A shove breaks open a section roughly half a meter across, and daylight pours through. Beyond it, he can see the snow-covered bulge of the Niflheim Main Dome, no more than a couple of kilometers away.
The sight brings back a childhood memory of catching a spider at his grandmother’s country house on Midgard and releasing it in the garden. As the spider scuttled away, he had felt like a benevolent god. Now he recognizes the reversal: he is the small creature, and the giant being underground has set him down outside its passage, close to the colony. The memory gives the unexplained release an image without settling its meaning; the encounter has placed Mickey7 in the position of a creature whose fate has been decided by a vastly stronger one.
Once clear of the tunnel, Mickey7 tries to contact Berto Gomez and Nasha but receives no response. Both had been out overnight, and he wonders whether Berto reported him killed in action and how soon the colony would recreate him. He has never witnessed that process himself, but suspects it would not take long. Rather than leave Berto a message, he decides to wait and disclose his survival in person if possible. The choice leaves open the possibility that the colony may believe he is dead even as he walks back toward it.
The return is a one-hour slog through knee-deep fresh snow. The morning is unusually mild, just above zero, with the wind stilled and a pink, cloudless sky above the low southern sun. Mickey7 reaches the colony’s perimeter, where sensor towers, automated burner turrets, and man traps guard the dome. The security system is designed for the danger of creatures that can travel beneath the snow beyond the sensors’ reach. He has emerged alive from precisely that hidden environment, carrying no explanation for why its largest inhabitant spared him.
