Niflheim Colony Dome
Mickey7Niflheim Colony Dome is the protected center of the human settlement on Niflheim, a place where survival depends on tightly coupled infrastructure and a guarded boundary. Its perimeter becomes the setting for a confrontation over the creepers and an antimatter weapon, then, as the colony begins to adapt to the planet, a threshold through which people cautiously venture outside.
Setting and Survival Systems
The dome shelters a beachhead colony on a world where establishing life beyond its walls remains difficult. Growing crops outside is a serious long-term challenge, while local microbiota also interferes with plants grown inside. The colony’s need to make its agricultural base work is not abstract: the same agricultural capacity would provide raw materials for producing another Expendable.
A central piece of beachhead infrastructure is the Biological recycler. It processes waste, food scraps, and eventually corpses, returning protein paste, vitamin slurry, and fertilizer. Its corpse hole opens as a quiet, odorless black disk; a disassembler field draws in dust, which vanishes in small flashes. The process breaks material down into component atoms and reassembles them as specified, consuming enormous energy. The colony has abundant energy for now because its power plant is an antimatter-driven starship engine, but that abundance is not inexhaustible: producing two antimatter devices sharply reduces the remaining store, and there is no near-term prospect of replenishing it. If the power plant loses fuel, the colony’s survival is at stake.
The Perimeter and the Creeper Threat
The dome’s defenses make the boundary between shelter and the planet visible. When Mickey approaches carrying an antimatter weapon and holding its trigger cord, the nearest perimeter pylons activate while he is still a hundred meters from the perimeter proper. Lights flash around their bases, and burners rise and turn toward him. He asks the people controlling them not to fire, warning that he does not want to pull the cord. The burners remain aimed at him, but do not shoot.
Marshall speaks to Mickey, who argues that the planet has another intelligent species and that killing the creepers would amount to genocide. He presents himself as the only available diplomat. Marshall eventually turns away and returns toward the lock; after the outer door shuts, the nearest burner goes dark and sinks back onto its bearings. Cat Chen considers the immediate crisis resolved, though only for the moment. The defenses that protect the colony have thus been brought to bear on a human carrying a weapon capable of catastrophic destruction, and their deactivation follows a dispute about whether the beings outside are enemies to be exterminated or a people with whom diplomacy is necessary.
A Changing Boundary
The dome’s relationship to the outside changes as the colony begins to recover. Once the weather improves, colonists initially welcome the change, then worry that the temperature might swing to the opposite extreme. It does not: after several months, conditions settle between brisk and balmy, and the Agriculture Section manages to establish an experimental plot outside the dome.
Green growth slowly raises the planet’s partial pressure of oxygen, but not enough to let people breathe unaided; whether the atmosphere will ever become breathable remains uncertain. The season itself may last years or end the next day. Rebreathers therefore remain necessary even as people begin spending more time outdoors. When Mickey asks Nasha to walk with him, Lucas waves them through the perimeter. Nasha takes Mickey’s hand, and they walk away from the dome. The guarded boundary that had framed a standoff now permits a tentative step into a landscape the colony cannot yet call safe or fully habitable.
