Tortoise
MomoThe Tortoise is the quiet, enigmatic guide who leads Momo from the Amphitheater through a city under pursuit and to the entrance bearing Professor Secundus Minutus Hora’s name. It does not explain its purpose in speech; instead, luminous writing on its shell directs Momo step by step. Its patient movements and practical messages turn an uncertain nighttime encounter into a journey toward safety and a new threshold.
Appearance and First Encounter
At about midnight, while Momo waits on the Amphitheater steps without knowing what she is waiting for, something lightly brushes her bare foot. In the darkness she makes out a large tortoise looking up at her. Its mouth seems to form a mysterious smile, while a friendly light in its shrewd black eyes gives her the impression that it is about to speak. The creature is unfamiliar, but its manner is welcoming rather than threatening. Momo bends down to tickle it under the chin and accepts its company, addressing it as Tortoise.
The first sign that this is no ordinary encounter appears on the creature’s shell. Momo cannot tell whether she had overlooked the letters before or whether they have only just appeared; they are faintly luminous and follow the shell’s natural patterns. Their message, “FOLLOW ME,” makes the Tortoise’s intention legible without resolving its larger purpose. Momo asks whether the message is meant for her, but the Tortoise has already started away. It pauses after a few steps to look back, and she follows.
A Guide Who Communicates by Signs
The writing on the shell is the Tortoise’s means of communication. Rather than stopping to explain the route, it gives Momo brief instructions that answer the immediate need of each moment. This makes its guidance concrete but limited: Momo can read where to go or how to proceed, while the reasons for the journey remain unstated. The messages are integrated into the animal’s appearance, following the patterns of its shell, so the means of guidance is visible on the very creature she is following.
When Momo wonders where the Tortoise is taking her, the shell supplies reassurance: “DON’T BE SCARED.” The words do not erase her apprehension. She admits that her claim to be unafraid is partly an effort to strengthen her own courage, and the route has become increasingly tortuous and erratic. The two have crossed parks and bridges, gone through subways and buildings, followed corridors, and even passed through cellars. Momo does not know that the Men in Gray are searching the city for her. The Tortoise therefore guides her through danger without making her aware of the full scale of the danger.
Its method is steady rather than forceful. The Tortoise moves ahead, pauses, and looks back; Momo follows patiently, step by step. When it leaves her to negotiate Never Lane alone, it does not abandon her when she falters. It retraces its path and comes back to her with a new instruction. Across these episodes, the creature’s patience is expressed through action: it waits, returns, and offers the next direction instead of demanding that Momo understand the whole journey in advance.
The Passage Through Never Lane
Never Lane presents the journey’s most unusual obstacle. As Momo enters, she feels as if she is struggling against a powerful current that pushes her backwards. Bent almost double, she tries to haul herself forward, while the Tortoise waits at the far end. When she calls that she is getting nowhere and asks for help, it slowly retraces its steps. Its shell then bears the instruction “WALK BACKWARDS.”
Momo turns around and obeys. The apparent contradiction becomes the means of progress: walking backwards lets her travel up the lane with ease. The change affects more than her direction of movement. As she walks backwards, she also thinks, breathes, and feels backwards—in the narrator’s formulation, she is living backwards. The Tortoise does not explain this strange rule; its brief instruction is enough to help Momo pass through it. Its role here is not to overcome the lane by strength but to guide Momo toward the action that makes passage possible.
Arrival at the Professor’s Door
At the end of the lane, Momo bumps into something solid and finds herself outside the last house, which stands at right angles to the others. Its ornate bronze door appears enormous at close range. The Tortoise has brought her to a long, lofty passage lined with marble statues, then waddles down it to a small door sized for Momo to duck through. On its shell, the final message announces, “WE’RE HERE.”
A sign beside the little door identifies Professor Secundus Minutus Hora. Momo takes a deep breath, lifts the latch, and follows the Tortoise inside; the latch clicks shut behind them. The sequence establishes the destination of its guidance without yet explaining the creature’s relationship to the professor or the reason it chose Momo. The Tortoise’s part in this passage is clear nonetheless: it leads her away from the exposed Amphitheater, through a city filled with the Men in Gray, and across Never Lane to the named entrance.
Narrative Role
The Tortoise is defined by the contrast between its slow pace and the urgency of the circumstances around Momo. It advances slowly, yet its pauses and shell-written directions keep the journey moving. Its messages are short, but each marks a change in what Momo can do: follow the creature, resist fear, walk backwards, and recognize that they have reached their destination. The encounter also changes the Amphitheater steps from a place of waiting into the beginning of a route whose purpose Momo does not yet know.
As a guide, the Tortoise offers no long account of the threat or destination. The reader, like Momo, encounters its intentions through visible instructions and the unfolding path. That restricted communication sustains the mystery of the journey, while the Tortoise’s recurring return and patient waiting make its guidance dependable. It carries Momo not by explaining the unknown, but by making the next step readable.
