The Dog Pack

Nightbitch

The Dog Pack is the recurring collective presence of dogs that marks the threshold between Nightbitch's human life and her animal transformation. First appearing as a trio of a golden retriever, a collie, and a basset hound lounging in the shade of the silver maple on her lawn, the pack grows into a nocturnal multitude of fifteen, twenty, or more dogs that fills her driveway, spills into the street, and pools into the shadows of her neighbors' lawns. The pack is both the agent of her metamorphosis and its witness, the community that strips her of her human clothing and forces her into the raw animal state she has been moving toward since the coarse black hair first sprouted from the base of her neck. In a novel where the boundary between human and animal dissolves, the pack is the living proof that the transformation is real, external, and shared, not merely a private delusion or a metaphor for maternal exhaustion.
