Their central doctrine, detailed in the Book of Revelations, foretells a cyclical apocalypse: every 2,049 years—a period they call a Year of Godliness—the six suns will vanish, the terrifying Stars will appear in the sky, and humanity, driven mad by the Darkness, will burn its own civilization to the ground. This prophecy, long dismissed as the ravings of fanatics, is ultimately proven devastatingly accurate, transforming the Apostles from a fringe cult into the architects of a new world order.
Origins, Structure, and Doctrine
The Apostles of Flame claim an origin stretching back to prehistoric times, possibly predating the last great cataclysm. Their headquarters is a magnificent golden tower in the exclusive Birigam quarter of Saro City, a testament to their immense wealth, which is amassed through centuries of shrewd investment and contributions from powerful industrialists like Bottiker 888 and Vivin 99. The organization is highly structured, with a hierarchy of robed monks and functionaries. The public face of the cult is the High Apostle Mondior 71, a figure of immense charisma and authority who delivers fiery prophecies of doom. However, it is revealed that Mondior is a fictional construct, a synthetic media creation. The true leader is Folimun 66, the public-relations adjutant, a coldly intelligent and utterly pragmatic man who has been the real power behind the throne for years. The Apostles' core belief is that the gods have made humanity imperfect and grant them a single Year of Godliness to reform. When humanity fails, as it always has, the gods send the Heavenly Flames to destroy the world, sparing only a few godly survivors to begin the cycle anew.
The Prophecy and the Conflict with Science
The Apostles' central prophecy—that the world would end on Theptar 19—initially places them in direct conflict with the scientific establishment. Journalist Theremon 762, initially skeptical, interviews Folimun and is struck by his intelligence and chilling rationality. Folimun calmly explains the coming catastrophe, citing the Book of Revelations and the organization's ancient records. The scientists at the Saro University Observatory, led by Athor 77, initially dismiss the Apostles as dangerous crackpots. However, as Beenay 25 discovers an orbital anomaly and Siferra 89 uncovers evidence of periodic fires at the Hill of Thombo, the scientists are forced to confront the terrifying possibility that the Apostles are right. This leads to a secret, tense meeting between Athor and Folimun, where the Apostle provides ancient astronomical data that helps Athor confirm the existence of Kalgash Two, the dark satellite that will cause the eclipse. This alliance of convenience is fraught with mistrust, as the scientists despise the Apostles' mysticism, and the Apostles view the scientists' rational explanations as blasphemy.
The Nightfall and the Rise to Power
On the evening of Theptar 19, as the eclipse begins, the Apostles' prophecy is fulfilled. Folimun himself intrudes into the Observatory, demanding that the scientists destroy their work and submit to Mondior's authority. He threatens that an Army of Holiness will attack if they refuse. In the ensuing chaos, as the Stars appear and the world descends into madness, the Apostles' disciplined followers are able to survive and even thrive. While the rest of society collapses into fire and anarchy, the Apostles' tower and its surrounding territory remain intact. In the aftermath, they emerge as the most organized and powerful faction. They seize control of the north side of Saro City, establishing a theocratic government. They also assemble a convoy of trucks and begin a military march south along the Great Southern Highway, intending to crush the nascent provisional government at Amgando National Park and any other competing power structures, such as Altinol's Fire Patrol.
The New Order and the Alliance with Science
Folimun's ultimate plan is not mere destruction but consolidation. He reveals to Theremon that he intends to offer the surviving scientists, including those at Amgando, posts in his new government. He understands that while religious totalitarianism is the only force capable of pacifying the traumatized and superstitious masses in the short term, the long-term survival of civilization requires the knowledge and rationality of the scientists. He plans to use the Apostles' authority to maintain order while the scientists work to rebuild the world's knowledge and, crucially, to prepare for the next eclipse two thousand years hence. Theremon, after a long conversation with Folimun, becomes convinced that this is the only viable path forward. He persuades Siferra to join the Apostles as well, arguing that working from within the new theocratic system is the only way to eventually guide the world back to reason. The novel ends with the two of them agreeing to ally with Folimun, accepting the necessity of a religious dictatorship as the price of civilization's survival.
