His doctoral thesis was on darkness-related mental disorders, and he describes his professional interest as encompassing "the irrational responses of the human mind to overwhelming stimuli" and "the whole roster of human nuttiness." The department is also home to Liliath 221, a fellow psychologist whose work involves experimental animal studies in mazes, indicating no overlap with Sheerin's clinical and theoretical focus. Sheerin has known Liliath for ten or fifteen years, and their relationship, though not romantic in a conventional sense, is a significant personal bond within the department.

Clinical Expertise and the Tunnel of Mystery

Sheerin's expertise is first demonstrated through his consultation on the Tunnel of Mystery incident at the Jonglor Centennial Exposition. Predicting Universal Madness

When the astronomical evidence for the eclipse emerges, Sheerin becomes the key figure linking the physical event to its psychological consequences. In a secret meeting with Athor 77, Beenay 25, and Siferra 89, Sheerin predicts that the eclipse will cause "universal Darkness, universal madness," affecting people to varying degrees from short-range disorientation to permanent destruction of reasoning powers. He argues that no one will be entirely unscathed, as Kalgash's inhabitants have evolved under perpetual sunlight and are not adapted for darkness. The Sanctuary and the Eclipse

Sheerin helps organize the university Sanctuary, an underground shelter for those who believe the eclipse prediction.
