Nightfall is the pivotal event of the novel, a total eclipse of the sun Dovim by the previously unknown satellite Kalgash Two, which plunges the entire planet Kalgash into an unprecedented period of complete darkness and triggers a global psychological breakdown, mass fires, and the collapse of civilization. The event is the culmination of multiple converging lines of evidence—astronomical, archaeological, and psychological—and its occurrence validates the long-dismissed prophecies of the Apostles of Flame, transforming the world in a single night.

Causes and Background

The eclipse was predicted by the astronomers of Saro University, led by Athor 77 and his protégé Beenay 25. Beenay discovered an anomaly in Kalgash's orbit that contradicted the Theory of Universal Gravitation, leading Athor to postulate the existence of a massive, invisible satellite, Kalgash Two. Further calculations by Beenay and the graduate students Faro 24 and Yimot 70 revealed that Kalgash Two's orbit would bring it between Kalgash and the sun Dovim at a time when Dovim was the only sun in the sky, causing a total eclipse. The periodicity of this eclipse was calculated to be exactly 2,049 years, matching the length of the "Year of Godliness" in the teachings of the Apostles of Flame. This astronomical discovery was corroborated by the archaeologist Siferra 89, who had excavated the Hill of Thombo and found evidence of cities destroyed by fire at regular intervals of approximately 2,000 years, suggesting that the eclipse had occurred repeatedly in the past, each time leading to mass insanity and conflagration. The psychologist Sheerin 501, who had studied the effects of darkness on the human mind, warned that the prolonged darkness would cause universal madness, as people would desperately seek light by any means, leading to uncontrollable fires.

What Happens

On the evening of Theptar 19, the predicted eclipse begins. As Dovim is slowly covered by the dark disk of Kalgash Two, the sky darkens, and a profound psychological terror grips the population. The mob, already agitated by the Apostles of Flame, storms the Saro University Observatory, destroying equipment and killing scientists. Inside the Observatory, the astronomers attempt to photograph the event, but the power fails, and they are forced to use torches for light. The Apostle Folimun 66, who had infiltrated the Observatory, is subdued but not before the chaos erupts. As totality approaches, the last sliver of Dovim vanishes, and the world is plunged into absolute darkness. Then, the Stars appear—thousands of brilliant points of light, which are actually distant suns, now visible because the light of Kalgash's own suns is no longer drowning them out. The sight of the Stars is so overwhelming that it drives nearly everyone who sees them into immediate, profound insanity. The mob, now completely mad, breaks into the Observatory, and the scientists themselves, including Theremon 762, who had been a skeptic, are driven to the brink of madness. The city of Saro City is set ablaze as the panicked populace lights fires to combat the darkness, and the long night of destruction begins.

Consequences and Aftermath

The immediate consequence of Nightfall is the complete breakdown of civilization. The city of Saro City is largely destroyed by fire, and the countryside is overrun by maddened survivors. The Observatory is wrecked, and many of its staff, including Athor 77, are killed. Sheerin 501 hides in the basement and survives, but later dies at the hands of anti-intellectual crazies. Beenay 25 escapes but wanders in a daze for days before finding his way to the Sanctuary, which has been abandoned. Siferra 89, after a period of mental dissociation, kills her colleague Balik 338 in self-defense and eventually joins the Fire Patrol, a vigilante group that attempts to control the use of fire. Theremon 762, after a harrowing journey through the forest and the ruined city, is captured by the Apostles of Flame. He learns that Mondior 71, the public face of the Apostles, is a fictional construct and that Folimun 66 is the true leader. Folimun reveals that the Apostles have preserved ancient records of previous cycles and that his goal is to use the chaos to establish a new world order, incorporating the surviving scientists into his government. Theremon and Siferra, after a long debate, decide to join the Apostles, seeing it as the only viable path to rebuilding civilization. The event of Nightfall thus serves as a catastrophic reset, destroying the old world and forcing the survivors to choose between competing visions of the future, with the Apostles of Flame emerging as the dominant power.
