The Sanctuary Decision

A Change of Heart The Plan Sheerin 501 is supposed to stay in the Sanctuary with other university families. But at the last moment, he decides to go to the Observatory to witness the eclipse. His curiosity overcomes his fear. The Journey He arrives at the Observatory and joins the astronomers. He engages in philosophical discussions with Theremon and Beenay, trying to distract himself from the approaching Darkness. The Hidden Fear Despite his bravado, Sheerin is terrified. He remembers his experience in the Tunnel of Mystery and knows what is coming.

The Basement Refuge

Survival Instinct The Panic When the Stars appear, Sheerin feels his sanity slipping. He flees to the basement and locks himself in a storeroom, hiding from the madness above. The Long Night He spends the hours of Darkness in the storeroom, clutching a hatchet, listening to the chaos. He survives physically but is deeply shaken. The Aftermath After dawn, he emerges to find the Observatory wrecked and many dead. He meets Yimot 70, and they try to find other survivors. They set out for the Sanctuary but encounter dangers.

Death at the Hands of Crazies

A Tragic End The Journey Sheerin and Yimot travel through the devastated suburbs. Yimot is killed by a child. Sheerin continues alone, weakened by hunger and despair. The House He tries to break into a house for food but is captured by a group of anti-intellectual crazies who blame university people for the catastrophe. They beat him to death. The Legacy Sheerin's body is later found by the Apostles. His predictions about mass insanity were accurate, but he could not save himself. His death underscores the brutality of the new world.
