Sheerin 501 is supposed to stay in the Sanctuary with other university families. But at the last moment, he decides to go to the Observatory to witness the eclipse. His curiosity overcomes his fear.
The Journey
He arrives at the Observatory and joins the astronomers. He engages in philosophical discussions with Theremon and Beenay, trying to distract himself from the approaching Darkness.

Despite his bravado, Sheerin is terrified. He remembers his experience in the Tunnel of Mystery and knows what is coming.

After dawn, he emerges to find the Observatory wrecked and many dead. He meets Yimot 70, and they try to find other survivors. They set out for the Sanctuary but encounter dangers.

The Legacy
Sheerin's body is later found by the Apostles. His predictions about mass insanity were accurate, but he could not save himself. His death underscores the brutality of the new world.
