Thargola's Sword is the principle of parsimony—often compared to Occam's Razor—that serves as a decisive methodological tool in the scientific crisis that unfolds at the Saro University Observatory. First articulated by the medieval philosopher Thargola 14, the principle holds that when multiple hypotheses are available, one must "drive a sword through any hypothesis that is not strictly necessary" or, in another formulation, "begin our considerations by striking the most complex of them with our sword." In the novel, it becomes the intellectual instrument by which Athor 77, the venerable director of the Observatory, steers his younger colleague Beenay 25 away from the catastrophic conclusion that the Theory of Universal Gravitation is invalid.

Origin and Formulation

The principle is attributed to Thargola 14, a medieval philosopher whose exact words are preserved in two slightly different versions. Athor 77, recalling the formulation he was taught, states it as: "If we are offered several hypotheses, we should begin our considerations by striking the most complex of them with our sword." Beenay 25, when asked, offers a parallel version: "We must drive a sword through any hypothesis that is not strictly necessary." Both formulations emphasize the same core idea: simplicity and necessity are virtues in scientific reasoning, and unnecessary complexity should be eliminated at the outset.

Application to the Orbital Crisis

When Beenay 25 brings his troubling calculations to Athor 77, he presents evidence that the orbit of Kalgash, as computed using the Theory of Universal Gravitation, does not match the observed orbital data. The discrepancy is small—a matter of a few decimal places—but potentially devastating to the entire theoretical framework. Beenay is devastated, believing he has overthrown the work of his mentor. Athor, however, applies Thargola's Sword to the situation. He identifies two competing hypotheses: first, that the Theory of Universal Gravitation itself is in error; second, that Beenay has left out some unknown and perhaps unknowable factor in his calculations. Accepting the first hypothesis, Athor argues, would cause "everything we think we know about the structure of the universe" to "tumble into chaos." Accepting the second hypothesis requires only locating the unknown factor, preserving the fundamental order of things. Because the second hypothesis is simpler—it requires less radical revision of established knowledge—Thargola's Sword directs inquiry toward it. Athor declares: "The hypothesis that the Theory of Gravitation is wrong falls before Thargola's Sword and we begin our investigations by working with the simpler explanation of the problem."

Subsequent Use and Thematic Significance

The principle is invoked again later in the novel, when Theremon 762 challenges the eclipse theory by arguing that there is nothing in the theory itself that predicts the fires that follow the Darkness. Sheerin 501 responds by applying Thargola's Sword to the competing explanations for the periodic destruction of the Hill of Thombo. He dismisses fantastic hypotheses such as "periodic rains of fire" or Kalgash passing through one of its suns, and affirms that the eclipse theory, which accounts for the phenomenon through mathematical consideration of Kalgash's orbit as affected by Universal Gravitation, is the simplest and therefore most credible explanation. Thargola's Sword thus functions as a recurring intellectual anchor, guiding the scientists toward the correct—and terrifying—conclusion that the world is about to be plunged into Darkness and chaos. It represents the power of rational, parsimonious thinking in the face of overwhelming evidence that threatens to overturn established scientific truth.
