Death of Mr. Jingles in the Present
In the present day at Georgia Pines, Paul Edgecombe reveals to his friend Elaine Connelly that Mr. Jingles, the mouse from 1932, is still alive, living in a shed on the grounds. Edgecombe has been caring for him, and the mouse still performs the spool trick, though he is old and frail. Brad Dolan, the abusive orderly, discovers them and startles the mouse, causing it to die of a heart attack. Edgecombe and Elaine bury Mr. Jingles in the woods. The mouse's death symbolizes the end of an era and the final fading of the miraculous events of 1932. Edgecombe is left alone with his memories and his unnaturally long life.
