First Appearance of the Mouse

A small brown mouse appears on the Green Mile, walking up the corridor as if checking the cells. Brutus Howell, Dean Stanton, and Paul Edgecombe watch in amazement as the mouse shows no fear, even approaching the duty desk. Brutus feeds it a piece of his sandwich, and the mouse eats neatly, sitting up and using its paws. Brutus jokingly enters the mouse in the visitors' log under the name 'Steamboat Willy.' The mouse disappears under the restraint room door, and despite searching, they cannot find how it entered or left. The mouse becomes a recurring, mysterious presence on the block, seeming to know when Percy is absent.
