William Wharton Attacks Dean Stanton
William 'Wild Bill' Wharton, a nineteen-year-old psychopath who killed four people, is brought to E Block. Feigning stupor, he suddenly attacks Dean Stanton, wrapping a wrist-chain around Dean's neck and choking him. Harry Terwilliger and Percy Wetmore are unable to stop him, but Brutus Howell arrives and knocks Wharton unconscious with a blow to the head. Dean is badly injured but survives. Wharton is locked in his cell, and the incident reveals his extreme cunning and violence. Paul Edgecombe realizes that Wharton is a far more dangerous prisoner than any they have handled before, and the guards must be constantly vigilant.
