Percy Stomps on Mr. Jingles

On the night before Eduard Delacroix's scheduled execution, Delacroix is playing with Mr. Jingles, throwing the colored spool for the mouse to fetch. The spool rolls out of the cell, and Mr. Jingles chases it into the corridor. Percy Wetmore, seeing his opportunity, deliberately stomps on the mouse, breaking its back. Blood gushes from the mouse's mouth, and Delacroix screams in horror and grief. Percy smiles, saying he knew he would get the mouse eventually. The other guards are horrified, and Delacroix is devastated. This act of cruelty sets the stage for John Coffey's miraculous intervention and deepens the guards' hatred of Percy.
