Frenesi Gates and Weed Atman: Affair Entangled in Political Betrayal

Vineland

Frenesi Gates and Weed Atman’s relationship develops where private desire and political observation become difficult to separate. Their intimacy is visible first through Frenesi’s camera: she lingers on Weed during a chaotic political gathering, while colleagues in 24fps suspect the two are having an affair. At the same time, Brock Vond’s influence over Frenesi grows, and her later disclosure that Weed is an informant recasts their closeness as part of a larger crisis of trust.

A relationship watched through the camera

At a late-night gathering presented as a political general assembly, music by Led Zeppelin blares over the speakers as bottles and joints circulate and some attendees have sex. Onstage, speakers shout over one another: some urge war against the Nixon regime, while others propose negotiating with it over tax revenues. Frenesi films the disorder, but the footage also captures its sense of liberation and shared possibility. Weed emerges through the crowd to repeated cries of his name, and Frenesi’s camera settles on him. She begins zooming toward his groin in time with the music whenever she has the opportunity. DL calls the technique subtle; Ditzah approves it. The sequence makes Frenesi’s attention to Weed legible to others even as the camera frames it as part of her record of a political moment.

Prairie watches the footage and suspects an affair from the way Frenesi films Weed. The suspicion is shared within 24fps, whose members think Frenesi is involved with him. Their interpretation rests not on a private confession but on an observable pattern of looking: the camera follows Weed, and its attention becomes hard to distinguish from Frenesi’s personal interest. The collective’s suspicion therefore joins political documentation to the more intimate question of whom Frenesi desires.

Weed’s complicated private life

Weed’s domestic circumstances are presented as unsettled. He is technically separated from his wife, Jinx, and shares custody of their children, Moe and Penny. A shifting number of former partners and their relatives also remain part of his orbit, sometimes appearing in person or by registered letter and sometimes gathering at one of Weed’s notorious family reunions. The current girlfriend, whoever she may be, is typically left to make sense of the gathering on her own.

At these reunions, children run around and eat while the adults drink, take drugs, embrace, cry, and stay awake through the night. False reconciliations are common, and the gatherings rarely resolve anything. Weed organizes them and holds the room’s attention, while women compete for it, sometimes physically. The account does not present Frenesi as entering a simple or settled partnership: her involvement takes shape in the midst of an already crowded, unstable private world.

Intimacy entangled with Vond’s influence

Frenesi’s connection to Weed develops as Brock Vond gains greater access to her life. At first, Frenesi tells herself that her footage is public property: she gives Vond copies and accepts only the cost of laboratory processing, reasoning that anyone should be able to screen films made for everyone. But Vond moves from watching the footage to advising her on what to film. As she follows his suggestions, he becomes increasingly involved in her life.

That influence has a concrete place and routine. Frenesi leaves a sink piled with dishes after one of Weed’s love feasts and catches an early flight to Oklahoma City, where she now meets Vond regularly in an out-of-the-way motel near South Meridian. They meet in a bedroom with waterbeds. Jinx drives Frenesi to the Los Angeles airport that morning, believing she is going to San Francisco. The contrast matters: Frenesi’s involvement with Weed is suspected by her comrades and visible in her footage, while her meetings with Vond are concealed behind a false destination.

During a storm, Vond speaks with Frenesi in a voice that is briefly unguarded and says he had not expected her to sleep with Weed. He adds that plans change. Frenesi understands what Vond wants her to do and recognizes that she might do it, although her thoughts turn not simply on pleasing him but on a sense that she has lost control as time rushes around her. The passage places her intimacy with Weed inside Vond’s political and personal pressure without depicting a completed action against Weed in this moment. Frenesi imagines that some lost, vulnerable version of Vond might still be reached and led toward a better self; that hope coexists with her recognition of the adult power he exerts.

Distance, suspicion, and disclosure

As Frenesi spends more time at Rex Snuvvle’s house and less time with anyone from 24fps, the collective decides to keep watch on her. DL suggests that Howie find a way to do so; Howie acquires an old surfboard as a prop and visits Rex’s home at least once a day. The surveillance is not prompted by a settled account of Frenesi and Weed’s relationship, but by her withdrawal from the collective and the uncertainty surrounding her associations.

One evening Howie falls asleep in a bedroom while a rerun of The Invaders plays. He wakes to an unusual episode in the living room and finds Frenesi and Rex sitting close together on a sofa, their faces flushed and their eyes wet. They had been laughing shortly before. Howie asks whether they have heard about Weed. The scene shifts the focus from Frenesi’s filmed attention to Weed toward what she knows and whom she chooses to tell.

Frenesi reveals to Rex that Weed is a Federal Bureau of Investigation informant whose task is to lead the group down the wrong path, where Vond will be waiting. Rex challenges her source; Frenesi says Weed himself told her. The disclosure gives the relationship its sharpest political consequence. Weed is at once the man Frenesi has filmed with conspicuous attention and the person she now identifies as a danger to the group. The available scenes do not settle the full course or ending of their affair, but they establish its defining tension: intimacy has unfolded amid observation, divided loyalties, and the possibility that political trust has been betrayed.
