Danubia

Blackwater

Danubia is a Tharcian battlecruiser whose arrival reverses the battle in the shoal zone: it destroys the Union battlecarrier Prosperity & Labor and helps turn Roland Horn’s desperate struggle into a survivable situation. Its importance lies not just in its size or firepower, but in the sudden shift it brings—from a destroyer hunting a damaged pilot to a Tharcian capital ship commanding the battle and opening the way to recovery operations.

Identity and Design

Danubia is a Tharcian gunship and the sister ship of the Battlecruiser Vespa. Roland first sees it rise from the dust of the shoal zone as a narrow point that expands into a vast, arrow-shaped structure. Its batteries include railguns, missiles, and point defenses; even the guns on the far side of its hull come into action as the ship ascends. The navigation lights at the aft end of its superstructure make its name visible.

The narration estimates Danubia’s length at between one and two kilometers, probably nearer two. Its railgun batteries overlap and cascade across the front and sides, so it can concentrate fire forward or direct as much as 75 percent of its guns to either side. An angled hull deflects railgun fire and disperses lasers. The result is a design built around heavy, overlapping fields of fire rather than the rapid launch of its own fighters: unlike a Union battlecarrier, Danubia does not need to reserve its principal gun armament around a Panzerter launch function.

Roland’s comparison makes the ship’s scale tangible. Against Danubia’s sky-blue hull, the advanced Ozelot looks like a gnat. He has seen footage of whales breaching the ocean, but finds the comparison inadequate as the enormous vessel rises into the Lagrange point. The ship’s appearance is therefore both a material fact and a visual reversal: what had been hidden beneath the shoal zone emerges as a powerful presence capable of changing the battle.

Arrival and Rescue

Before Danubia appears, Roland is clinging to a small asteroid, cutting his thrusters to conceal his approach while an enemy destroyer searches for him. The rock rolls with him; the destroyer overshoots, recognizes the deception, and begins to realign for another attack. Roland can read the enemy’s search patterns and calculate how to push off despite a wrecked ankle, but neither side has time to act before an unknown variable intervenes.

Danubia rises between Roland and the destroyer. Its batteries strike the enemy ship until the destroyer’s spaceframe disintegrates; the battlecruiser then eclipses the wreck. Friendly navigation-buoy IFFs identify more Tharcian ships entering the shoal zone, mostly smaller vessels accompanying the capital ship. For Roland, the arrival changes the immediate prospect from an isolated encounter with a pursuing destroyer to the presence of a powerful friendly force. He tells Charlotte Huber that they are going to be all right.

The rescue has also been anticipated at the command level. Marcell explains that a relief force is coming from Deimos and that, if the Union delays too long, it will face a formidable task force headed by Danubia. He confirms that Conner is aboard: after the stunt at Vespa, the authorities wanted him assigned to a capital ship. Marcell’s tactical overlay still tracks Roland’s retreating IFF, and his final wish for the ensign underscores the distance between the enormous fleet operation and the individual pilot being watched within it.

Destruction of Prosperity & Labor

Danubia’s arrival is followed by an offensive from the Tharcian ships emerging behind it. Fresh destroyers race past the battlecruiser, using precise railgun fire and focused laser barrages to strip away its already limited escorts. They then turn toward the Union battlecarrier, joined by swarms of Tharcian Panzerters. As the battlecarrier attempts to launch its own Panzerters, a Tharcian unit carrying a torpedo launcher hits one in the launch bay. The damaged Panzerter smashes the catapult mechanisms as its atmosphere explodes from overpressure.

Marcell recognizes the capital ship rising from the shoal zone as Danubia, briefly imagining the ghost of the Battlecruiser Vespa before realizing it is her sister ship. Its design gives it a decisive advantage against Prosperity & Labor. Union battlecarriers mass their railguns in a belt line ahead of the engineering section, allowing them to fire forward or astern while still launching Panzerters rapidly. Danubia, by contrast, distributes overlapping and cascading fields of fire across its dorsal and ventral surfaces. It can bring all its guns forward or direct three quarters of them in nearly any other direction.

The engagement demonstrates what that arrangement means in practice. Danubia catches Prosperity & Labor in a concentrated barrage. Railgun shells punch through the Union ship; magazines detonate, fuel lines ignite, and decks explosively decompress as their atmospheres fail. Although the battlecarrier launches some Panzerters, they flee the destruction rather than fight. Continued fire twists its long frame until its front begins to shear away from the railgun belt and engineering decks. Danubia’s angled prow delivers the final blow, cutting the ship in half. A premier Union capital ship is thus rendered helpless by the gunship’s ability to bring heavy fire to bear across multiple directions.

The Battle’s Aftermath

After breaking Prosperity & Labor, Danubia moves upward toward the other Union battlecarrier, Knowledge & Industry. The latter cuts its engines and burns in the opposite direction in an attempt to escape, despite the minefield trapping most of the remaining Union ships in the lower shoal zone. Another Tharcian carrier emerges from the depths, while Tharcian Panzerters attack the Union reconnaissance cruisers and the second battlecarrier. The cruisers are struck by torpedoes, rifle fire, and plasma swords; as the fighting continues, Marcell’s tactical net clears as their drives die and the ships become lifeless among the melee.

Knowledge & Industry continues to fight, but its drive goes out as Danubia approaches. Instead of firing another railgun barrage, the battlecruiser launches boarding pods. Smaller ships and Panzerters pass the capital ship as Tharcian marines, armed with fighting bars and MP-88s, confront the disabled carrier’s crew. The change from bombardment to boarding shows Danubia’s role in the battle expanding from destroying a capital ship to enabling the capture of another.

With the Union fleet’s position breaking, Marcell finally relaxes and slumps in his chair. He orders Opera to contact Danubia so that recovery operations can begin, directs the executive officer to bring Duncan Glenn back aboard if he is alive, and requests battle-damage assessments from every ship that has disengaged. Those orders connect the battlecruiser’s arrival to its practical aftermath: Danubia has not merely won a spectacular exchange of fire; its intervention has created the conditions for rescue, recovery, and a new accounting of the surviving force.
